• Court Case Goldman Sachs & Benny Tjokrosaputro over Hanson Shares

    Today (07/02) a court hearing takes place in Jakarta in which Goldman Sachs International, the London-based unit of Gold Sachs, opposes Indonesian business tycoon Benny Tjokrosaputro, president director of Indonesian property developer Hanson International. Both sides are suing each other and seek damages. The outcome of this case is considered important for the foreign investor community as it involves "legal certainty regarding legitimately executed share trading through the Indonesia Stock Exchange".

  • Currency of Indonesia: Rupiah versus US Dollar on Monday

    The Indonesian rupiah is appreciating against the US dollar on Monday (06/02). Based on the Bloomberg Dollar Index, the rupiah had appreciated 0.13 percent to IDR 13,325 per US dollar by 12:15 pm local Jakarta time. It is assumed that optimism about Indonesia's improving economic fundamentals in combination with rebounding commodity prices and slower-than-expected US economic growth supports the currency of Indonesia. Meanwhile, other Asian emerging market currencies are also appreciating against the greenback.

  • Economic Growth Indonesia: GDP at 5.02% in 2016, Not Good, Not Bad

    Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP) expanded 5.02 percent year-on-year (y/y) in full-year 2016. Although the figure is higher compared to the revised 4.88 percent (y/y) growth pace that was recorded in the preceding year (hence effectively ending the nation's economic slowdown that occurred in the years 2011-2015), the slow pace of acceleration may disappoint part of the investor and analyst communities.
