The trial on 2 July involves export-import procedures for international container ships at the New Priok Container Terminal I (NPCT I). Prasetyadi, Director of Operations and Information systems at Pelindo II, said one of the matters being tested involves the common gate, the location where import and export products are inspected. In case of any flaws there will be two weeks to improve the system before commercial operations start in the second week of July.

Earlier, on 27 May 2016, Pelindo II already conducted a trial operation at NPCT I involving the Kapal Sinar Sumba Voy ship, owned by Samudera Indonesia Shipping Line. This ship has a gross tonnage (GT) of 18,000 ton. Besides infrastructure and logistics, this trial run also tested the integration of NPCT I with other government institutions such as the quarantine department and customs office.

NPCT I is the first of three offshore container terminals - part of the first phase of the New Priok Port - that is ready for operations. This 32-hectare terminal has a capacity of 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per year and a 850-meter dock (this dock will be fully ready in late-2016) and therefore should be able to accommodate two mother vessels and one feeder boat. Officials say that the NPCT I terminal should manage to cut logistics costs by up to 30 percent. Nippon Mitsui & Co Ltd, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line), and PSA International Pte Ltd (PSA) are all involved in the construction of this terminal.

According to information from the state news agency Antara, the construction of the New Priok Port requires a total investment worth USD $2.5 billion, almost half of this is financed through a loan. The whole New Priok Port project is scheduled to be completed by 2023.
