As we have mentioned on various occasions in our updates and reports before, the year 2020 was a very tough one for airlines. The social and business restrictions that governments imposed across the world in an effort to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus took a huge toll.
Boeing, the American multinational corporation that designs, manufactures and sells airplanes, has been experiencing severe turbulence in Indonesia ever since Lion Air flight JT-610 dove into the sea on 29 October 2018 shortly after take-off from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport outside Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board (including crew).
After plenty of public outcry over the past month, the Garuda Indonesia Group decided to cut prices of air tickets by 20 percent for all domestic flight routes. Starting per Thursday (14.02.2019), air passengers can enjoy lower ticket prices when flying Garuda Indonesia, Citilink Indonesia, Sriwijaya Air, and NAM Air.
Despite posting a net loss in full-year 2017, Indonesia's national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is optimistic that it will see net profit in 2018. Last year the airline's net loss reached USD $213.4 million, dropping dramatically from a net profit of USD $9.4 million in the preceding year. What strategy will Garuda Indonesia apply to turn the loss into a profit in 2018?
National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia targets to see the arrival of 50 new airplanes up to 2024 in an effort to revitalize the airline's fleet and improve its on-time performance. Pahala Mansury, President Director of Garuda Indonesia, explained that the airline has already been making these orders since 2014. One Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft arrived on 26 December 2017. Between 2020 and 2024 more planes will follow, between 5-10 per year.
State-owned airport services company Angkasa Pura II that operates the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport located just outside Indonesia's capital city of Jakarta, says construction of the airport's third terminal is nearing completion. Angkasa Pura II is optimistic that the IDR 5.7 trillion (approx. USD $432 million) terminal will be ready for operations on 26 May 2016. Budi Karya Sumadi, General Director of Angkasa Pura II, said this terminal - called Terminal 3 Ultimate - will be used for international and domestic flights of Garuda Indonesia (which currently uses Terminal 2).
Indonesian airline Garuda Indonesia will evaluate its sponsorship deal with English Premier League football club Liverpool within the next two months. Arief Wibowo, General Director of Garuda Indonesia, said brand awareness abroad is important and the sponsorship deal is also a source of pride for the airline. However, considering the deal costs about USD $9 million per year, the airline has to evaluate whether it is worth continuing the sponsorship deal that is set to expire in mid-2016.
After the government of Indonesia announced that, effective immediately, a tax incentive is offered to those companies that revalue their fixed assets (as part of the government's fifth stimulus package), both fully state-owned utility firm Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) and partially state-owned airline Garuda Indonesia started to prepare proposals for asset revaluation. A revaluation would increase their equity, allowing them to obtain more loans for business expansion.
On Tuesday (30/06), an Indonesian military airplane (C-130 Hercules) crashed into a densely populated residential area in the city of Medan in North Sumatra. The aircraft, en route from the military airport in Medan to Tanjung Pinang (capital of Indonesia's Riau Islands), crashed shortly after take-off and probably carried 122 people. A government spokesman said that at least 141 people have died. This figure is likely to rise. According to local media, the pilot of the military aircraft requested to return to base due to engine trouble.
State-controlled national airline Garuda Indonesia may need to stop direct flights between Jakarta and Amsterdam (The Netherlands) because the runway of Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport does not meet required safety standards. Airport operator Angkasa Pura II recently decreased the airport’s pavement classification number (PCN) as the surface of the runway is not strong enough to accommodate wide-body Boeings that take off while being fully loaded with passengers and fuel.

Indonesia's air transport industry is about to see a big change as the nation's national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia said it will take over operational control of the rival Sriwijaya Group. This move seriously boosts the Garuda Group's share of the fast-growing domestic aviation market.
In 2017 Indonesia's Transportation Ministry allowed the opening of 83 new flight routes (commercial civil flights), consisting of 58 domestic routes and 25 international routes. There are two reasons why the government encourages the opening of new routes: (1) to make the remote areas of Indonesia less isolated, and (2) to strengthen inter & intra regional transportation.

Indonesia's flag carrier Garuda Indonesia, a state-controlled five-star airline that is listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, requested to postpone the arrival of new airplanes in an attempt to improve the company's corporate earnings. Pahala M. Mansury, General Director of Garuda Indonesia, said the order (the number of airplanes) has not been revised, neither has the company's fleet plan (that runs to 2020) been changed. Only the timing of arrival of five planes has been altered.
Indonesia's national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is ready to open a new flight route between the famous island of Bali and Chengdu (the provincial capital of Sichuan province in Southwest China) in order to cater Chinese passengers going to Bali. Arif Wibowo, General Director of Garuda Indonesia, informed that this new international route is scheduled to be opened in January 2017. He added that Chengdu has great potential in terms of boosting foreign tourist arrivals to Bali. Garuda Indonesia already flies passengers from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou to Jakarta.
Indonesian flag carrier Garuda Indonesia, the nation's top class airline, targets to fly 27.5 million people in 2016, up 10 percent year-on-year (y/y) from the airline's total number of air passengers last year. Passenger growth is supported by the arrival of five new wide-body airplanes in 2016. The company, listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange but majority-owned by the Indonesian government (60.6 percent), is particularly eager to boost the number of international passengers.
The number of air passengers in Indonesia will most likely fail to meet its growth target in 2014. Based on government data, the number of air passengers in Southeast Asia’s largest economy reached 47.5 million in the first eight months of 2014, a 5.82 percentage point growth from the same period last year. However, the Indonesia National Air Carrier Association (INACA) initially targeted annual passenger growth in the range of 12-15 percent for 2014. Amid slowing economic growth, people’s purchasing power has declined.

As companies' financial results of 2013 slowly start to be released, two reports - so far - have raised eyebrows due to significant declines in net profit. These are publicly listed, but majority state-owned, airline Garuda Indonesia and fully state-owned electricity firm Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN). Both companies felt the impact of the sharply depreciating Indonesia rupiah exchange rate. The currency fell over 21 percent against the US dollar in 2013 due to capital outflows amid looming US tapering and current account deficit concerns.
