    Indonesia's Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) has released the direct investment figures - both foreign direct investment (FDI) and domestic direct investment (DDI) - for the fourth quarter of 2016 (implying we now also know the full-year 2016 figures). The BKPM data show a number of interesting developments that we outline below.

  • Growth of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Indonesia Slows in Q2-2016

    Direct investment in Indonesia (both domestic and foreign) totaled IDR 298.1 trillion in the first half of 2016, up 14.8 percent from investment realization in the same period one year earlier. Foreign direct investment (FDI) was recorded at IDR 195.5 trillion¹, up 12.3 percent (y/y) - and accounting for 65.6 percent of total investment realization in the first six months of 2016 - while domestic direct investment (DDI) rose 20.0 percent (y/y) over the same period. On a quarter-to-quarter basis, FDI into Indonesia rose 7.9 percent, considerably lower than the 17.1 percent (q/q) growth pace in the preceding quarter.

  • Opening Foreign Investment in Indonesia: E-Commerce Industry

    Soon foreign investors will be allowed to control a full 100 percent stake in electronic commerce (e-commerce) businesses in Indonesia. Currently, the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) is completing a new regulation that streamlines the latest regulatory changes in this industry (this regulation is expected to be completed in June 2016). Earlier this year, Indonesian President Joko Widodo signed a decree that opens (more wider) foreign ownership in various industries, including Indonesia's e-commerce industry.

  • Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Indonesia Rises in Q1-2016

    In rupiah terms, foreign direct investment (FDI) into Indonesia in the first quarter of 2016 grew 17.1 percent year-on-year (y/y) to IDR 96.1 trillion according to the latest data from the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM). Meanwhile, in US dollar terms FDI in Q1-2016 rose 4.5 percent (y/y) to USD $6.9 billion (using the IDR 13,900 per USD exchange rate set in the 2016 state budget). Due to the volatile rupiah rate, Indonesia's FDI always tends to be somewhat distorted when comparing these data in different currencies or in different time intervals.

  • Chinese Furniture Companies Want to Relocate to Indonesia?

    According to Franky Sibarani, Head of the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), around 200 Chinese furniture companies have expressed their interest to relocate their factories to Indonesia because operational costs in China have been rising sharply in recent years, particularly wages. Moreover, rattan (an important material for furniture) is readily available in Indonesia. Sibarani said the changing structure of the Chinese economy (shifting from investment and export-driven to consumption) is why many Chinese manufacturing companies want to relocate their companies abroad.

  • Foreign Direct Investment into Indonesia Grows 19.2% in 2015

    In rupiah terms, foreign direct investment (FDI) into Indonesia increased by 19.2 percent year-on-year (y/y) to IDR 365.9 trillion in 2015, according to the latest data from the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM). The BKPM, the central government's investment services agency, said FDI was strong in the fourth quarter of 2015 - rising 26 percent (y/y) - on the back of the government's recently unveiled series of economic stimulus packages.

  • Negative Investment List of Indonesia to Be Revised

    The Indonesian government announced it plans to allow 100 percent foreign ownership of cold storage businesses, sugar factories, rubber manufacturing companies, and the e-commerce business by revising Presidential Regulation No. 39/2014 on the Negative Investment List. The Negative Investment List (in Indonesian: Daftar Negatif Investasi) lists the sectors that are either fully or partially closed to foreign investment. Meanwhile, the government is studying whether other sectors can also be opened (or opened up wider) to foreign investors.

    The Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), the central government's investment services agency, targets to see a 15 percent growth to IDR 594.8 trillion (approx.     The Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), the central government's investment service agency, said foreign direct investment (FDI) is projected to account for 65 percent - or IDR 386.6 trillion (approx. USD $28.2 billion) - of total direct investment in Indonesia in 2016. The BKPM sees domestic direct investment realization next year at IDR 208.4 trillion.     In the fourth week of January, Bank Indonesia's rupiah exchange rate (the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate or JISDOR) depreciated 0.41 percent against the US dollar. This weakening trend of the rupiah was caused by various factors. Most importantly, the US dollar has been gaining strength against emerging currencies, including Indonesia, as speculation emerged that the Federal Reserve will curtail its massive monthly bond-buying program (quantitative easing) by more than just USD $10 billion per month.

  • New Mining Law of Indonesia: 3 New Smelters Ready for Production in 2014

    The BKPM announced that three processing and mineral concentrate refineries (smelters) are in the construction phase and expected to be ready for production in Indonesia this year. Two of the three smelters will process and purify iron ore while the third will process bauxite ore into chemical grade alumina. The three smelters are owned by Indonesia Chemical Alumina. This company, a joint venture between Aneka Tambang (Antam) and Japan, operates in West Kalimantan.
