  • Indonesia Investment Coordination Board Targets 15% Investment Growth

    Government investment service agency Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) targets IDR 524 trillion (USD $42 billion) worth of investments in 2015, a 15 percent growth from estimated investment realization this year (IDR 450 trillion). BKPM is optimistic that after the ‘political year’ of 2014 (due to the legislative and presidential elections) the new government will push for the implementation of various infrastructure projects such as toll roads, harbours and airports, thus making Indonesia more attractive to foreign investors.

    As the number of foreign tourists rise rapidly and there is increasing demand for conferences, exhibitions and business meetings, Indonesia will see a massive inflow of investments for the construction of hotels and condominium hotels (condominium hotels combine features of apartments and hotels). In 2015, the value of new (condo) hotels projects is estimated at IDR 38.5 trillion (USD $3.2 billion), up 57.3 percent from last year.   • Singapore Largest Foreign Investor in Indonesia in the First Half of 2014

    According to the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Singapore is the largest foreign investor in Indonesia. In the first half of 2014, Indonesia received USD $3.4 billion worth of investments from Singapore. In total, foreign companies invested IDR 150 trillion (USD $12.9 billion) in Indonesia during the first six months of 2014. This is the highest amount of foreign investment that Indonesia has ever managed to attract in a six-month period. It also diluted fears that the legislative and presidential elections would cause a temporary slowdown.

  • Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Indonesia Hits New Record in Q2-2014

    According to data from the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), total investment realization in Indonesia grew 16.4 percent (year-on-year) in the second quarter of 2014 to IDR 116.2 trillion (USD $10.0 billion), the highest ever quarterly investment result and thus proved that Indonesia’s legislative and presidential elections in 2014 were no reason to postpone direct investments. Foreign direct investment (FDI) was recorded at IDR 78.0 trillion (USD $6.7 billion), while domestic direct investment (DDI) was IDR 38.2 trillion (USD $3.3 billion).

    The Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), the investment service agency of the Indonesian government, is optimistic that investment realization in Indonesia (Southeast Asia’s largest economy) can surpass the level of IDR $100 trillion (USD $8.5 billion) in the second semester of 2014. Sectors that see increased investments in this quarter are the consumer goods and mining sectors. Total investments in Indonesia in the first quarter of 2014 reached IDR 106.6 trillion, an all-time record high quarterly investment realization.

  • Indonesia Revises Negative Investment List to Boost Foreign Investments

    The Indonesian government has revised the country's Negative Investment List (Daftar Negatif Investasi) in order to boost foreign and domestic direct investments (FDIs) into Indonesia. The revision, which is not fully published yet, is based on Presidential Decree No 39 - 2014 on the List of Open and Closed Sectors for Investments (Perpres 39 - 2014 tentang Daftar Bidang Usaha Tertutup dan Bidang Usaha Terbuka dengan Persyaratan di Bidang Penanaman Modal). However, for some sectors the maximum limit of foreign ownership has been curbed.

  • Revision of Indonesia's Negative Investment List to Attract Investment

    Chairman of the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Mahendra Siregar said on Thursday (24/04) that Indonesia's Negative Investment List (Daftar Negatif Investasi), which stipulates which sectors in the Indonesian economy are open to foreign investment as well as the percentage of foreign ownership permitted, has been revised. The list was revised through a Presidential Decree earlier this week. The revision means that the limit of foreign ownership in several sectors will be raised.

    The Indonesian government is in the process of revising the country's Negative Investment List (the list that states which sectors of the economy are closed to foreign investment). Head of the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Mahendra Siregar, said that a number of (sub) sectors, previously closed to foreign investment, will be opened up this year.     Investment realization in Indonesia in the first quarter of 2015 totaled IDR 124.6 trillion (USD $9.7 billion), up 16.9 percent from the same quarter last year.     A total of 35 American companies are interested to invest a combined USD $61 billion in Indonesia over the next five years according to a survey conducted by the Paramadina Public Policy Institute, the American Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia (AmCham Indonesia), the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo), and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin Indonesia). These 35 US companies have already invested a total of USD $65 billion in Indonesia over the period 2004 to 2012.

    The Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) announced that growth of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Indonesia has slowed in the first nine months of 2014. In the first three quarters Indonesia saw the influx of IDR 228.3 trillion (USD $18.7 billion) worth of FDI, a 14.6 percentage point increase year-on-year (y/y). However, this growth pace is much lower than the 21.3 percent point growth of FDIs in the first nine months of 2013. In US dollar terms the decline was even greater as the rupiah has been depreciating.

    According to a survey of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), 44.9 percent of respondents assessed Indonesia as the most promising investment destination for the next three years. The respondents in this survey involved 500 Japanese companies that engage in international businesses. For Indonesia it is the first time in 21 years that it forms the preferred choice of overseas investments for Japanese companies, thus replacing China.
