  • Foreign Banks in Indonesia Post Large Profit on Rupiah Depreciation

    According to data from the Financial Services Authority (OJK), foreign banks operating in Indonesia have posted great profit growth in the January to May 2014 period. Combined, these foreign banks have recorded a 94.36 percentage point growth (year-on-year) in profit to IDR 3.79 trillion (USD $323.9 million) in the first five months of this year. The reason behind this jump in profit is the sharply depreciated rupiah exchange rate. Over the course of 2013, the rupiah fell over 25 percent against the US dollar.

    After a worrying trade deficit of USD $1.96 billion in April 2014, the trade balance of Indonesia swung back into a surplus in May 2014. On Tuesday (01/07), Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) announced that the May trade surplus was USD $69.9 million. The country’s exports rose 3.73 percent (month-on-month) to USD $14.83 billion, while imports fell 9.23 percent (month-on-month) to USD $14.76 billion in May. However, in the first five months of 2014 Indonesia still recorded a trade deficit of USD $0.82 billion.

    The Indonesian rupiah exchange rate came close to the IDR 12,000 per US dollar mark on Wednesday (18/06). Based on the Bloomberg Dollar Index, Indonesia’s currency depreciated 0.87 percent to IDR 11,997 per US dollar.     After a promising start of the day, the rupiah exchange rate and Indonesian stocks lost all of their earlier gains ahead of closing on Monday day (19/05). Around 10:00 local Jakarta time, the rupiah rate appreciated more than 0.60 percent to IDR 11,346 per US dollar on speculation that Jusuf Kalla would be nominated as Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's running mate in the presidential election (9 July 2014), backed by a coalition consisting of the PDI-P, NasDem, PKB and Hanura. After the official declaration, however, the currency lost all of its earlier gains.

    Standard & Poor’s (S&P) affirmed Indonesia's sovereign credit rating at BB+/stable outlook. Favorable fiscal and debt metrics as well as moderately strong growth prospects were cited as the key factors supporting the affirmation of Indonesia's sovereign credit rating. On the other hand, moderately weak institutional strength, low GDP per capita and external vulnerability are factors that can negatively influence the rating.
