  • Indonesian Minimarkets Continue to Grow at the Expense of Supermarkets

    Turnover of Indonesian minimarkets has grown sharply. In 2014, the value of sales is expected to jump 13.5 percent to IDR 94 trillion (USD $8.3 billion) compared to this year's projection of IDR 82.9 trillion (USD $7.3 billion). Indonesia's large population (over 240 million) and rapidly urbanizing society gives rise to high demand for nearby shops where people can find their daily needs. In recent years, outlets of minimarkets have been mushrooming in Indonesian cities, particularly on Java. Outside the island of Java, there is still ample room for growth.

  • Indonesia's Consumer Confidence Falls in July because of Rising Inflation

    According to a Bank Indonesia report that was released on Monday (19/08), consumer confidence in Indonesia has weakened after the government decided to raise prices of subsidized fuels in June 2013. The country's consumer confidence index fell 8.7 points to 108¹ in July from 117 points in June. Higher fuel prices led to higher transportation costs that subsequently made many retailers increase prices of products, thus impacting on Indonesian households' purchasing power. In July, the annual inflation rate accelerated to 8.61 percent.

  • Ahead of Ramadan and Idul Fitri, Indonesia´s Retail Sales Grow 14.8%

    Data from Indonesia´s central bank, Bank Indonesia, indicate that Indonesia´s retail sales grew 14.8 percent in June 2013 compared to the same month last year. The growth was higher than expected. Previously, a survey among Indonesian retailers showed that a growth rate of 10.8 percent was expected in June. In May 2013, retail sales had climbed about 12 percent (YoY). As such, these numbers are evidence of growing domestic consumption led by the country´s rapidly expanding middle class.

    Sri Rejeki Isman (Sritex), an integrated textile manufacturer, is offering 5.6 billion new shares (equivalent to 30 percent of its total stock equity) to the public through an initial public offering (IPO) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). The company expects to reap about IDR 1.34 trillion (USD $136.7 million) in new funds through this IPO. The offering period is from 10 to 12 June 2013 and its listing debut is scheduled for Monday 17 June 2013. Underwriter for the IPO is Bahana Securities.

    Electronic City Indonesia (ECI), a leading electronics retailer in Indonesia, plans to conduct an initial public offering (IPO) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in June 2013. According to the company's website, Electronic City is Indonesia's first modern electronic convenience store, specialized in selling electronic products for Indonesia's middle class and elite. Through the IPO, the company hopes to raise about USD $150 million which will be used for capital expenditure.

    PT Dyviacom Intrabumi Tbk, an Indonesian internet services provider, has announced to leave the information technology sector as it has not shown significant growth and instead focus on Indonesia's lucrative (food) consumption sector. For that reason it will purchase large stakes in three companies that are engaged in the country's food industry: Indomarco Prismatama, Fast Food Indonesia, and Nippon Indosari Corpindo. The combined costs amount to IDR 6.7 trillion (USD $690.7 million).

    The government of Indonesia is studying the possibility of issuing a presidential regulation that sets new rules regarding convenience stores and minimarkets in all Indonesian provinces. Darmin Nasution, Minister of Economic Affairs, said the new regulation would not be aimed at undermining the minimarket sector of Indonesia.

    Indonesian retail sales surged 14 percent in November 2013 from one year earlier (the highest growth rate since July 2013). On a month-to-month basis, Indonesia's retail sales increased 1.5 percent from October 2013. These findings were the result of a survey conducted by the central bank of Indonesia (Bank Indonesia), which surveyed 650 retailers in 10 Indonesian cities. The bank's survey also indicated that Indonesian retailers may increase prices of their products in 2014 in order to compensate for the depreciating rupiah exchange rate.

    Retail sales in May 2013 rose 1.5 percent (month to month) or 8.6 percent (year on year) in Indonesia according to a publication of Indonesia's central bank (Bank Indonesia) released on Tuesday evening (16/07). The report made a positive impact on today's trading day as stocks in Indonesia's consumer goods sector rose 2.5 percent. Indonesia's main stock index (IHSG) gained 0.75 percent to end at the level of 4,679.00 points. Foreigner investors are still mostly avoiding the Indonesian stock market, but did record a net purchase today.
