  • Which Sectors are Vulnerable to Indonesia's Slowing Lending Growth?

    Bank Indonesia (Indonesia's central bank) has expressed that it will support slowing credit growth in the country's banking sector next year in order to foster a more stable financial environment amid a complex external and internal context. In recent years, credit growth in Indonesia has grown over 20 percent annually, while in 2013 it is expected to slow to between 18 and 20 percent amid a tighter policy regime. In 2014, Bank Indonesia targets credit growth between 15 to 17 percent. As a result banks will be more cautious in their lending approach.

    Despite Indonesia's macroeconomic conditions and liquidity experiencing a correction, Fitch Ratings believes that Indonesia's major banks are able to withstand a reasonably high degree of asset-quality stress, mainly due to the banks' strong standalone loss absorption cushions and likely support from highly rated foreign parent companies. Because of the banks' sound earnings buffers, they are expected to cope with the higher non-performing loans (NPLs) which are expected to emerge in the next one or two years ahead.

    Indonesia Investments updated the company file of Bank Central Asia (BCA). The company is Indonesia’s largest lender by market value and the country's second largest bank by assets. Robust loan disbursements translated into BCA's higher net profit growth in the first half of 2013. In this period the bank posted a 19.3 percent growth (yoy) in net profits to IDR 6.3 trillion, mainly supported by higher net interest income and fee-based income. The bank's loan portfolio grew 24 percent to IDR 280.4 trillion.

    Singapore-based DBS Group, a leading financial services group in Asia, expects Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP) growth to reach 5.8 percent in 2013, while it forecasts growth of 6.0 percent in 2014. This year, Indonesia has to cope with ups and downs due to several domestic and foreign factors. According to the institution, two issues stand out as being significantly influential this year. These are the government's decision to increase prices of subsidized fuels in late June and the country's sharply depreciating rupiah.

  • Credit Growth in Banking Sector Will Fall below 20% after BI Rate Hike

    According to Indonesia's central bank (Bank Indonesia), the higher benchmark interest rate (BI rate) will slow down credit growth in the Indonesian banking sector from a current pace of 19.6 percent (after second week of August 2013) to around 18 percent. The BI rate was raised to 7.0 percent last week. Besides the BI rate, both the lending facility rate and the deposit facility rate (Fasbi) were raised to 7.0 percent and 5.25 percent respectively to support the rupiah, while curbing inflationary pressures.

    Indonesia's banking sector is expected to have no difficulties in coping with current financial turmoil in Indonesia's economy. The country's banking industry is much stronger and healthier now than when the crisis in 1997-1998 or 2008 erupted.     Indonesia's central bank (Bank Indonesia) has approved Singapore's DBS Group to buy a maximum stake of 40 percent in Indonesia's Bank Danamon Indonesia, the sixth largest bank of Indonesia in terms of asset size. Last year, the DBS Group wanted to purchase a 67.73 percent stake, owned by Asia Financial Indonesia, in the bank but the purchase was delayed as Indonesian regulators wanted to limit foreign ownership in the country's financial sector due to fears of foreign domination.
