  • Asian Stocks Up on Higher Oil Price & Monetary Easing Hopes

The new trading week started positively in Asia. After Wall Street had risen sharply on Friday (22/01) due to higher oil prices (particularly causing surging energy stocks), Asia extended the rally on Monday (25/01). In addition, investors are optimistic that the central bank of Japan will turn to more easing (the institution will conduct its monthly policy meeting later this week), while the European Central Bank had already hinted at further easing in last week's policy meeting.

  • Indonesia Stock Market Update: China GDP & Oil in Focus

The spotlight is - as usual - on China today as the world's second-largest economy released various macroeconomic data and markets' reaction toward these data will determine where stocks are heading for today. Wall Street will not influence Asian markets because this US financial and investment community was closed for Martin Luther King Jr Day on Monday. Meanwhile, the crude oil price remains low around USD $29 per barrel.

  • Stock Market Update: Indonesian Stocks to Be Under Pressure

The Jakarta Composite Index is expected to be under pressure on Monday (18/01) as the selloff continues in Asia. Both China's Shanghai Composite Index and Japan's Nikkei 225 index were down around 1.50 percent on Monday morning. Main concerns of investors are the persistent slide of crude oil prices as well as weak US retail sales and US industrial output in December. As a result, high-yielding currencies weakened, while demand for safe haven assets supported government debt and gold.

  • Global Selloff Continues on Low Crude Oil and China Turmoil

Asian stocks are again in deep red territory on Thursday (14/01), led by Chinese shares (which are on track to enter a bear market) as well as Japanese shares. It means that the rebound that had occurred earlier this week - caused by positive export data from China - was short-lived. The continued slide of oil prices (below USD $30 per barrel) and turmoil in China cause money to flow away from equity and fragile emerging market currencies.

  • Indonesia Stock Market Update: Asian Markets down after Paris Terrorist Attacks

On the first trading day after the terrorist attacks in Paris (leaving 129 people dead and hundreds injured), stocks declined in Asia as investors are cautious. Although markets had one weekend to digest the news, it is still expected that the tragedy in Paris will cause a sharp yet short-term impact on global equity markets. Apart from terrorism, volatile oil prices as well as concern about China's economy and uncertainty about the timing of a US interest rate hike continue to plague markets.

  • Most Asian Stocks Start Lower on China's Weak Manufacturing PMI

Most Asian stock indices opened lower on the first trading day of the week on persistent concern about China's economy. Chinese authorities announced that the country's official October manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) was 49.8 (a reading below 50.0 indicates contraction), unchanged from the preceding month and below analysts' consensus of 50.1. Concern about sluggish manufacturing in China caused falling stock indices. Japanese shares were affected the most.

Yesterday (26/02) strengthening Asian stock indices were unable to push the benchmark index of Indonesia (Jakarta Composite Index/IHSG) into the green zone. Today (Thursday 27 February), we witnessed the contrary: the IHSG climbed 0.80 percent to 4,568.94 points, while Asian indices were mixed. Indices in China, the Sensex and the Nikkei fell, while others rose. Those that rose responded positively toward the release of higher sales of new US single-family homes. However, the conflict in the Ukraine limited their growth.

  • Adanya Pengurangan Pembelian Obligasi AS Menjatuhkan Saham Asia

  • Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) and Indonesian Rupiah Fall on Friday

The Jakarta Composite Index (Indonesia's benchmark stock index) fell 1.73 percent on Friday (01/11) to 4,432.58 points. A persistent concern for investors is the tapering issue of the Federal Reserve's quantitative easing program. Analysts expect the program to continue at a pace of USD $85 billion per month until at least March 2014, but investors remain concerned. Another issue that brought negative market sentiments was September's trade figure, which was released today. In September, Indonesia recorded a trade deficit of USD $657.2 million.

  • Indonesia's Benchmark Stock Index (IHSG) Falls Slightly on Thursday

As had been hoped, after closing the gap at 4.375-4.403, Indonesia's benchmark stock index (IHSG) did not continue its fall at the same pace as it had in the past couple of days. Investors were still cautious, however, and took a wait and see attitude. Foreign investors were net sellers of Indonesian stocks, while the rupiah exchange rate kept depreciating. Moreover, Asian stock indices were mixed and thus provided no good support for the IHSG. The index fell 0.02 percent to 4,405.89. Domestic investors were net buyers of Indonesian stocks.

  • Indonesia's Benchmark Stock Index (IHSG) up 0.17% on Thursday

Despite concerns that Indonesia's benchmark stock index (IHSG) would weaken on Thursday's trading day (12/09), the index ended 0.17 percent up to 4,356.61 points. Indices on Wall Street and in Asia impacted positively on the IHSG and kept foreign investors increasing their stock portfolios in Indonesia. Moreover, the Bank Indonesia's decision to raise the country's benchmark interest rate (BI rate) by 25 basis points to 7.25 percent was generally well-received by investors. Banking stocks helped to support the IHSG.

Indonesia's Benchmark Stock Index Down amid Negative Market Sentiments

The rebound that happened in the first session of Friday's trading day (23/08) gave hope that Indonesia's main stock index (IHSG) would end the disastrous week on a positive note. However, in the second session of the day market participants began selling Indonesian assets causing the index to fall again, although the fall was limited. In line with the Asian region, the index lost 0.04 percent to end at 4,169.83 points. Even the highly anticipated 'rescue package' of the Indonesian government was not able to support the index.

  • Amid Mixed Asian Markets Indonesia's Main Index Rises 1.02%

After Wall Street turned back into the green zone on Tuesday (13/08) and was accompanied by continued rising stock indices in Europe, it provided good support for Asian stock indices on Wednesday (14/08), including Indonesia's main stock index (IHSG). Indonesian mining commodities and plantation stocks fell but these losses were offset by rising big cap stocks (particularly finance stocks) and speculation that Indonesia's central bank will keep its benchmark interest rate (BI rate) at 6.50 percent.

Japan's Nikkei index, which weakened seriously after the country's disappointing Q2 GDP result, rebounded and had a positive impact on the IHSG. Lastly, positive European openings made sure the IHSG would stay in the green zone.

  • Possible End to Quantitative Easing Will Impact on Emerging Economies

Worldwide, most stock indices fell on Wednesday (07/08), particularly Japan's Nikkei index, after it has been speculated that the Federal Reserve may phase out the third round of its quantitative easing program in September 2013. This program, involving a monthly USD $85 billion bond-buying package, aims to spur US economic growth while keeping interest rates low. However, one important side effect has been rising stock markets around the globe. Now the end of QE3 is in sight, investors shy away from riskier assets.

On the last day before a week-long holiday, Indonesia's main stock index (IHSG) rose by 0.36 percent to 4,640.78 points on Friday (02/08). Although it was a relative quiet trading day, the performance was in line with today's performance of other Asian indices as well as European and American indices on Thursday (01/08). Stocks in the country's basic industries sector provided most support to the rise of the index. The Asian market still felt the positive impact of the Federal Reserve's announcement that it will continue the quantitative easing program.
