  • Moody’s Assigns (P)Baa3 Rating to Indonesia’s Samurai Bonds

    The Samurai (yen-denominated) bonds that are to be issued by the Indonesian government (through private placement) received a provisional rating of (P)Baa3 (stable outlook) from Moody’s Investors Service. Part of the Samurai bonds to be used by the government are without guarantees from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC). It will be the first time for Indonesia to issue unguaranteed Samurai bonds since 1983 and thus the issuance serves as a test to measure Japanese investors’ confidence in Indonesian assets.

  • Indonesia to Sell Unguaranteed Samurai Bonds to Japanese Investors Soon

    The Finance Ministry of Indonesia started to market multi-tranche Samurai (yen-denominated) bonds, partially without guarantees from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), a Japanese public financial institution. It will be the first time that Indonesia issues unguaranteed Samurai bonds and thus the result will inform how confident Japanese investors are in Indonesia’s debt markets.   • Investor Appetite for Indonesia’s Euro-Denominated Bonds Declined

    According to data released by the Indonesian Finance Ministry, Indonesia collected 1.25 billion euro (approx. USD $1.4 billion) through the issuance of 10-year euro-denominated bonds, yielding at a discount of 3.555 percent, on Thursday (23/07). With incoming bids at 1.9 billion euros, it is clear that investor appetite for Indonesia’s euro-denominated bonds declined compared to the country’s first euro-denominated bond issuance in July 2014 (which was oversubscribed 6.7 times and could therefore carry a yield of 2.976 percent only).

  • Indonesian Stocks & Rupiah Update: Flat Performance on Tuesday

    While most Southeast Asian stock markets and emerging Asian currencies strengthened on Tuesday (03/03) on the back of a rebounding yen and - contrary to expectation - the decision of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to leave its cash rate a record low of 2.25 percent, Indonesian stocks and the rupiah performed rather flat. The benchmark Jakarta Composite Index fell 0.06 percent to 5,474.62 points, while the Indonesian rupiah rate appreciated 0.01 percent to IDR 12,969 according to the Bloomberg Dollar Index.

  • Islamic Finance in Indonesia: Sale of Sukuk Retail Bonds

    Indonesia eyes to raise IDR 20 trillion (USD $1.6 billion) from the sale of sukuk, Islamic bonds, to Indonesian citizens between 23 February and 6 March 2015. These three-year Sharia-compliant retail bonds (SR-007 retail sukuk) offer an 8.25 percent coupon rate, the highest premium over existing securities in two years. The minimum order for these bonds starts at IDR 5 million and the maximum is IDR 5 billion. The Indonesian Finance Ministry said that proceeds of the debt sales will be used to finance the country’s state-budget deficit.

  • Currency Update: Indonesia’s Rupiah Continues to Weaken against US Dollar

    Indonesia’s rupiah exchange rate continued to depreciate on Wednesday (07/01). Based on the Bloomberg Dollar Index, the currency had depreciated 0.66 percent to IDR 12,731 per US dollar by 15:50 pm local Jakarta time amid prolonged weak global sentiments. Falling oil prices signal sluggish global economic growth - with the exception of the US economy which is showing structural recovery and thus fuels expectation of higher US interest rates - and speculation that Greece may exit the Eurozone.

  • Government of Indonesia to Issue USD Bonds in Early 2015

    The Indonesian government has mandated Citigroup, HSBC and the Standard Chartered Bank to arrange the issuance of US dollar-denominated sovereign bonds in January 2015. The government also considers to issue euro-denominated bonds next year. Previously it had been reported that the Indonesian government plans to issue samurai bonds and global sukuk (Islamic bonds) in the first quarter of 2015 (as this is considered a relatively stable period) before the US Federal Reserve hikes its key interest rate.

    Today (21/01), the government of Indonesia auctions rupiah-denominated state bonds of IDR 10 billion (USD $833 million) in order to reap funds to finance targets set in the government's 2014 state budget (APBN 2014). The bonds, involving the new issuance of SPN12150108 and re-openings of series FR0069, FR0070, and FR0071, have a nominal value of IDR 1 million each. Series SPN12150108 is issued at a discount yield. The central bank of Indonesia (Bank Indonesia) organizes the auction using a multiple price method.
