  • Production Costs in Indonesia's Ceramic Industry Could Fall 35%

    The Indonesian Ceramic Industry Association (Asaki) estimates that production costs in Indonesia's ceramic industry could decline up to 35 percent now the government plans to lower the gas price for industrial usage. Elisa Sinaga, Chairman of the Asaki, said Indonesian ceramic producers currently pay an average USD $9.1 per mmbtu (million metric British thermal units) for the ceramic production process, considerably higher than the gas prices that manufacturers pay in Singapore, Thailand, and India. This difference makes Indonesian ceramic products less competitive.

  • GDP Update: What about Indonesia's Economic Growth in Q1-2016?

    Darmin Nasution, the Chief Economics Minister of Indonesia, said economic growth of Indonesia in the first quarter of 2016 may be somewhat curtailed as the (food) harvest season has shifted from March to April and May. The harvest season is important for the economy because it causes a multiplier effect. However, government-led infrastructure investment may still be able to push Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP) growth higher in Q1-2016 compared with the 5.04 percent (y/y) growth of Q4-2015. Nasution said he expects a Q1-2016 GDP growth rate around 5.1 - 5.2 percent (y/y).

  • Fitch Ratings Affirms Indonesia's BBB- Investment Grade Credit Rating

    Global credit rating agency Fitch Ratings affirmed Indonesia's sovereign credit rating at BBB- (investment grade) with a stable outlook. The country's long-term foreign and local currency issuer default rating, the senior unsecured foreign and local currency bonds, and Islamic certificates (sukuk) were all affirmed at BBB-. Meanwhile, the short-term foreign currency IDR was affirmed at 'F3', the country ceiling at BBB, and the outlook on the long-term IDRs are stable. Through the affirmation Fitch acknowledges Indonesia's ongoing commitment to structural reforms amid recent economic woes.

  • Economy of Indonesia: Economic Growth at 4.73% y/y in Q3-2015 - Analysis

    Indonesia's economic performance in the third quarter of 2015 was a bit disappointing as the 4.73 percent year-on-year (y/y) growth pace in Q3-2015 was slightly below market expectations at 4.8 percent (y/y). On a positive note, however, Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP) growth accelerated from the six-year low of 4.67 percent (y/y) in the preceding quarter. A look at the table below shows that Indonesia's third quarter GDP growth rarely outpaces growth in the second quarter. This is a hopeful sign indeed.
