  • Stocks & Rupiah Update Indonesia: Jakarta Composite Index Rebounds

After having plummeted about 7 percent over the course of seven trading days, Indonesia’s benchmark Jakarta Composite Index rebounded directly after opening on Monday (04/05). At 10:41 am local Jakarta time, the index had surged 1.30 percent to 5,152.95 points. As Indonesian stocks are generally ‘oversold’ they have become attractive to investors. Moreover, most US and European stock indices ended higher at the end of last week hence providing more fuel for Indonesian stocks to rebound today.

  • Indonesia's Rupiah Exchange Rate and Stock Index Rise Sharply on Monday

Both the rupiah exchange rate and the Jakarta Composite Index strengthened significantly on Monday's trading day (13/01) after the government introduced a milder version of its mineral ore export ban on Sunday (12/01). Full implementation of the ban would have burdened the country's already wide current account deficit. The ban immediately pushed up the nickel and copper prices today. The central bank's Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (JISDOR) rose 1.75 percent to IDR 12,047 per US dollar on Monday (13/01).

  • Indonesian Rupiah Exchange Rate Today: Extending Depreciating Trend

On Tuesday (26/11), Bank Indonesia's mid rate depreciated 0.37 percent to IDR 11,765 per US dollar, which is the lowest level the currency has touched since March 2009. Main reason for today's decline is the government's US dollar-denominated bond auction yesterday (25/11) that fell USD $450 million short of its target. The bond issuance was negatively impacted by investors' concern about the looming scaling back of the Federal Reserve's quantitative easing program as US economic data improve.

  • Largest Indonesian Companies in Terms of Market Capitalization

In recent years, Astra International, one of Indonesia's largest diversified conglomerates, dominated the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in terms of market capitalization. However, it increasingly felt the competition of HM Sampoerna, Indonesia's largest tobacco company. Over the last five years, HM Sampoerna's market capitalization grew by a staggering 746.2 percent. It is also interesting to note that a  handful of Indonesian companies account for over one-third of market capitalization of Indonesia's stock exchange.

  • Foreign Investors Push Indonesia’s Jakarta Composite Index Up

Although at the end of Wednesday’s trading day (11/06) Indonesia’s benchmark stock index (known as the Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG) was up, the index had been moving in the red zone during most of the day. Moreover, the index did not get support from the Indonesia rupiah exchange rate nor did it get support from Asian stock indices which tended to decline after yesterday’s weakening indices on Wall Street. Fortunately, foreign investors recorded net buying, thus contributing to the 0.52 percent growth of the IHSG to 4,971.95 points.

  • Profit Taking and Tapering Concern Causes Indonesia's Market to Sink

Today (27/01), Indonesia's benchmark stock index (the Jakarta Composite Index, abbreviated IHSG) fell 2.58 percent to 4,322.78 points. This sharp decline can only be explained by profit taking amid market uncertainty. As I have reported before, the IHSG is highly susceptible to profit taking when negative sentiments arise in the market. Factors that accounted for these sentiments were the continued depreciation of the rupiah exchange rate and falling Asian stock markets (that were impacted by Wall Street's negative ending last week).

  • Fed Outcome and Mixed Corporate Earnings Reports Cause Falling Index

Despite foreign investors recording a net buy on the Jakarta Composite Index on Thursday (31/10), a depreciating rupiah as well as falling stock indices across Asia made investors concerned. Thus, the benchmark index of Indonesia followed the pace of other Asian indices and ended on 4,510.63 points (a 1.40 percent fall). The outcome of the Federal Reserve's FOMC meeting did not support the rupiah. On the contrary, the rupiah fell after the Fed stated to continue quantitative easing but that the tapering may start sooner than expected.

  • Top Ten Largest Companies in Indonesia by Market Capitalization

Indonesia's largest company by market capitalization is still HM Sampoerna, the country's largest tobacco company. The company has been the top company in Indonesia since March 2013 when it replaced Astra International, Indonesia's largest diversified conglomerate, on the top spot. Astra had been Indonesia's largest company since 2010. Currently, the third-largest company in terms of market capitalization is Unilever Indonesia. Unilever, which is Indonesia’s largest consumer goods producer, jumped four places in the ranking since late 2012.

  • Indonesia's Main Stock Index (IHSG) up 2.80% after Ben Bernanke's Speech

Indonesia's main stock index (IHSG) was able to continue its rise on Thursday (11/07) despite mixed markets in the United States and Europe, that were waiting for the release of the Federal Reserve minutes, on the previous day. The minutes and Ben Bernanke's speech indicate that the bond-buying program will be continued for a while and this made investors decide to buy Indonesian assets, particularly large cap stocks such as Unilever Indonesia, Bank Mandiri and Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa.

Although the stock markets of the USA and England were closed on Monday (27/05), strong European and Asian indices indicated that market participants were back in business. This also applied to the main stock index of Indonesia (IHSG), which regained the points it had lost on Monday. A number of blue-chips were chased by investors: Astra International, Unilever Indonesia, Lippo Cikarang and Semen Indonesia. Foreigners were particularly interested in stocks of Bank Mandiri, Bank Pembangunan Daerah Jawa, and Waskita Karya.

  • Indonesia's Main Stock Index (IHSG) Bounces Back after Two Days of Losses

The upward movements of both American and European stock indices on Friday (03/05/13) provided good support for today's performances of indices in Asia, including the Indonesia Stock Index (IHSG). After having been hit hard for two consecutive trading day's, the IHSG rebounded despite foreign investors still selling off their Indonesian stocks. Others, however, use this momentum to hunt for stocks that are now considered cheap after last week's fall.
