It is always important to be aware of the direct (and close) link between a country’s population and national economy. A large population size, especially in combination with high growth/birth rates, implies the availability of a large workforce and strong domestic consumer market. This subsequently has a positive impact on the national economy.
Albeit still at an admirable level, Indonesia’s economic growth rate fell slightly short of expectations in the third quarter of 2024 (Q3-2024). Based on the data released by Indonesia’s Statistical Agency (Badan Pusat Statistik, BPS) on 5 November 2024, Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 4.95 percent year-on-year (y/y) in Q3-2024.
Between May and September 2024, Indonesia had experienced a (remarkable) five-month deflation streak, driven by contracting food prices. And so, we were certainly quite interested in the latest consumer price index (CPI) data that were released by the Statistical Office of Indonesia (Badan Pusat Statistik, BPS) on 1 November 2024.
Although it wasn’t a big surprise (as the Indonesia Stock Exchange had already suspended trading of the company’s shares since May 2021), it was still shocking to read that Indonesian textile giant Sri Rejeki Isman (Sritex), which is one of the older generations of companies in Indonesia, was officially declared bankrupt by the Semarang City Commercial Court on 23 October 2024.
