To be honest, we were surprised to see deflation in Indonesia in September 2021 as we expected sliding new COVID-19 cases and the government’s relaxation of social and business restrictions (PPKM) on Java and Bali to give a slight boost to demand.
Qatar-based global communications company Ooredoo QPSC and Hong Kong-based multinational conglomerate CK Hutchison Holdings Limited signed an agreement to merge their Indonesian businesses: Indosat Ooredoo (which is publicly listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange or IDX under ticker code ISAT) and Hutchison 3 Indonesia (known for its brand Tri); a deal that is valued at USD $6 billion.
Between November 2020 and June 2021 we saw Indonesia’s manufacturing sector recovering from the ultra-lows that were recorded in the second and third quarters of 2020.
As expected, Indonesia posted very mild inflation in August 2021 amid the country’s (continued) social and business restrictions (PPKM) that disrupt demand across the economic centers on Java and Bali.
