• Bank Indonesia: Foreign Exchange Reserves at Record High in May

    The central bank of Indonesia (Bank Indonesia) announced the country's foreign exchange reserves rose by USD $1.7 billion to reach the new record high of USD $124.95 billion at the end of May 2017. Growth of Indonesia's foreign exchange assets was attributed to foreign exchange receipts (mainly originating from tax revenues and government oil & gas export earnings), as well as to Bank Indonesia's foreign exchange bills auction.

  • Stock Market & Currency Update: Asian Markets Relieved on Friday

    Markets in Asia seem relieved one day after "Super Thursday" as there were no major upsets that rocked stock and currency markets (with the exception of the British pound that depreciated significantly after exit polls suggest the United Kingdom is heading for a hung parliament with May's Conservatives losing the clear majority). Meanwhile, the Comey testimony and ECB policy meeting had no destabilizing impact on Wall Street. Hence, US stocks gave big support to Asian markets on Friday (09/06).

  • Traffic Safety in Indonesia: Most Car Tires in Bad Shape

    Goodyear Indonesia, a leading manufacturer and distributor of tires in Indonesia, encountered an interesting, and yet alarming, fact as it is holding its Ramadan Trade-In program (3-18 June 2017) in shopping centers across Jakarta, Bogor and Surabaya. Under this program people can have the tires of their cars checked at the Goodyear booths. So far around 8,000 cars have been checked and apparently 60 percent of these cars had tires that were in a bad condition.

    Indonesia's Industry Ministry is optimistic that the nation's manufacturing activity will improve in the second quarter of 2017, primarily supported by rising production in Indonesia's automotive and food & beverage sectors amid the Ramadan month and subsequent Idul Fitri celebrations. This period always triggers a peak in consumption due to the many food parties (especially in the evening). Moreover, car and motorcycle sales tend to rise ahead of the Idul Fitri period when millions of Indonesians travel back to their places of origin to spend a few days with their families.
