• Bank Central Asia Now Largest Company on Indonesia Stock Exchange

    Bank Central Asia (BCA) is now the the biggest company in terms of market capitalization on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). At the end of trading on Tuesday (09/05) the company's market cap stood at IDR 443.8 trillion (approx. USD $33.4 billion), replacing cigarette manufacturer HM Sampoerna with its market cap at IDR 440.8 trillion. BCA, part of the Djarum Group, is the second-largest bank in Indonesia in terms of assets.

    Indonesia's benchmark Jakarta Composite Index was slightly in green territory shortly after opening on Wednesday (10/05), seemingly recovering from yesterday's losses when market participants were alarmed by the controversial two-year prison sentence for former Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama ("Ahok") that was handed by the North Jakarta District Court as the defendant was found guilty of blasphemy. Another matter that impacted negatively on Indonesian stocks was the big drop in global coal prices.

  • Politics of Indonesia: Jakarta Governor Sentenced to 2 Yrs in Prison

    This is a sad day for Indonesia. Incumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (better known by his nickname Ahok) was found guilty of blasphemy by the North Jakarta District Court and sentenced to two years in prison. After the verdict Ahok was immediately taken into custody, implying Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat now replaces Ahok until the end of his term in October 2017.

  • Rupiah Exchange Rate News: Bank Indonesia's Intervention in Markets

    Sugeng, Deputy Governor of Indonesia's central bank (Bank Indonesia),  confirmed on Monday morning (08/05) that his institution has recently been intervening in the foreign exchange market in an effort to limit sharp rupiah appreciation. So far in 2017 the Indonesian rupiah has appreciated 1.11 percent against the US dollar with most of the rupiah's advance stemming from the first month of the year.
