Jongkie Sugiarto, Chairman of Gaikindo, said the Indonesian economy has been stabilizing (or actually accelerating) over the past year and this has had a positive impact on people's purchasing power as well as consumer confidence in Indonesia. Meanwhile, Gaikindo organized several big car events, including the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) in Tangerang, Makassar and Surabaya earlier this year. At these events the new Toyota Calya and Daihatsu Sigra, two low cost green cars, were launched.

Sales of Honda cars increased markedly in the first 10 months of 2016, reaching a total of 168,937 units hence controlling 19.3 percent of Indonesia's car market, up from a 15 percent market share one year ago. Popular Honda cars are BR-V, New Honda Mobilio, New Honda Brio Satya, All New Honda Jazz, and HR-V 1.5L. However, Toyota remains the most popular car in Indonesia, controlling about 54 percent of the market.

In full-year 2016 Indonesia's car sales are expected to rise modestly to the range of 1.0 - 1.1 million sold vehicles. Visit this page to read an analysis of Indonesia's automotive industry.
