If Gaikindo's full-year car sales target of 1.05 million units in 2016 is achieved, then it would imply a five percent (y/y) growth from car sales in 2015. This modest growth is the result of the modestly improving economic growth and purchasing power this year. Amid bleak purchasing power car manufacturers decided to launch various new car models with a relatively cheap price tag (below IDR 250 million).

Based on the latest data from Gaikindo, Toyota remains the clear market leader in Indonesia in terms of car sales. In the January-November 2016 period, a total of 349,707 Toyota units were sold on the Indonesian market, about 36 percent of total sales, followed by Honda (19.0 percent), Daihatsu (17.8 percent), and Mitsubishi (9.2 percent).
