Indonesia-based film production house MD Pictures made its trading debut on Tuesday (07/08). It was a success as the company's shares soared nearly 50 percent, meaning the auto reject system kicked in. MD Pictures is the 31st company to have completed its initial public offering (IPO) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange so far in 2018. There are now 595 companies listed on the local bourse in Indonesia.
MD Pictures is the first film production company to become a listed company in Indonesia. Therefore, MD Pictures President Director Manoj Punjabi called it not only a historic day for the company but also for the whole movie industry of Indonesia.
He added that "movies are often underestimated, while they actually have a significant impact on culture and set new trends".
Through the IPO, MD Pictures offered 1.3 billion shares, equivalent to 13.75 percent of the company's total share capital, to the public for a price of IDR 210 per share. Thus, it managed to collect IDR 274.63 billion (approx. USD $19 million). Punjabi said many artists took the opportunity to invest in the company. Besides the IPO, MD Pictures also issued a mandatory convertible bond.
Proceeds obtained through the IPO and bond issuance will be used for business expansion, including exclusive contracts with artists and directors, strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights, and the development of animation movies. The company aims to produce between 12-15 movies per year. Production costs of one movie range between IDR 7 billion (approx. USD $490,000) and IDR 25 billion (approx. USD $1.7 million) depending on the marketing mix.
Punjabi said MD Pictures will also go international by establishing joint ventures with South Korea-based Studio Invictus and China-based Xing Xing Studio.
In full-year 2017 the national cinema audience in Indonesia reached 42.7 million. Indonesian movies control 35 percent of the film market, the remainder is controlled by foreign movies.
So far in 2018 a total of 31 companies have been added to the Indonesia Stock Exchange:
