Global software security group Kaspersky Lab says Indonesia is the leading country in terms of online financial fraud. Based on a survey conducted by Kaspersky Lab involving 26 countries around the globe, 26 percent of online consumers in Indonesia become victim of online financial fraud. Countries that rank second and third in this index are Vietnam (25 percent) and India (24 percent). Ross Hogan, Global Head of Kaspersky Lab's Fraud Prevention Division, says the company detected an increasing amount - and a wider variety - of online financial scams worldwide.
Internet has opened up the world, ... also to criminals. Online retail purchases entail risks as you may pay for an order you will never receive or your credit-card details are hijacked by a third-party during the process, or you reply to a fake email promising you millions of US dollars in exchange for personal information, or you become victim of phishing pages that are after sensitive information such as usernames & passwords. The list can go on and on, particularly as online scammers become smarter. Hogan says one of the key problems is that Internet criminals continue to find new ways to steal information or money from Internet users. One of the more recent tactics of online criminals is the sending of an email - pretending to originate from a renowned bank, financial institution, or online retailer - that requests for personal information from the recipient.
Earlier this month Kaspersky Lab released a report showing that nearly one in two Internet users (worldwide) are targeted by online scams (usually involving attempts to obtain sensitive financial information from Internet users). Eleven percent of these targeted Internet users have indeed lost money due to an online scam. Kaspersky Lab further notes that one in five Internet users have lost more than USD $1,000 due to online scams, an impressive figure that makes it attractive for criminals to engage in these sort of crimes.
Kaspersky Lab operates in nearly 200 countries across the globe. The company is headquartered in Moscow (Russia), while its holding company is registered in the United Kingdom.
