Consumer Price Index – Food & Education Lead the Charge as July 2025 Inflation Accelerates
In July 2025 we saw some more marked inflationary pressures in Indonesia. Based on the latest data released by Statistics Indonesia (or BPS), Indonesian inflation was recorded at 0.30 percent month-on-month (m/m) in July 2025. Key factors were (as usual) food prices and (a bit unusual) education that pushed inflation higher.
Conditions were similar to June 2025 as the first half of July 2025 was characterized by a school holiday (just like the second half of June), and therefore demand for food remained strong in July 2025. Holidays are often centered around shared meals and gatherings with family and friends. Interestingly enough, people not only tend to eat more during holidays, but studies have also shown a significant rise in calorie intake and food expenditures during festive periods, with a focus on more indulgent and less healthy foods.
Meanwhile, on a year-on-year (y/y) basis Indonesian inflation rose to 2.37 percent, up from 1.87 percent (y/y) in June 2025. It is the highest annual inflation rate since June 2024, but remains comfortably within the central bank’s target range of 1.50 – 3.50 percent (y/y) for 2025.
