  • Indonesian Motorcycle Sales Strong, but may Slow down in Second Half 2013

Motorcycle sales in Indonesia rose 20 percent (year-on-year) to 661,282 units in June 2013. The head of the commercial department of the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), Sigit Kumala, said that sales peak in June and July because of the Lebaran tradition that follows the holy fasting month (which starts tomorrow). After this fasting month, many Indonesians go back to their places of birth for a couple of days. Motorcycles are one of the modes of transportation used for this short holiday.

  • Ramadan and Lebaran Result in Higher Consumer Spending in Indonesia

The holy fasting month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calender, and subsequent Idul Fitri (or Lebaran) festivities, when many Indonesians go back to their home towns for several days, will arrive soon (on or around 9 July 2013). This annual recurring tradition has some big economic implications as Indonesia's Muslim community increases spending prior and during this period to buy new clothes, shoes, food and drinks as well as transportation fares to travel back to their places of birth.

  • Indonesia's Inflation Rate Will in Peak in July After Fuel Prices Kick in

Indonesia's inflation rate in June was 1.03 percent, a significant rise compared to the previous month (deflation of 0.03 percent). Although the government's decision to increase the price of subsidized fuel in the second half of June 2013 already made an impact on the country's inflation rate, it is expected that in the next two months inflation will peak over two percent. Apart from the fuel price, other factors that will cause high inflation are the start of the holy fasting month (Ramadan), the new school year and the higher electricity rate.

  • Indonesia's Manufacturing Growth of 2013 is Revised Down to 6.5 Percent

About a week ago, Indonesia's highly optimistic minister of Industry, MS Hidayat, stated that Indonesia's non oil & gas manufacturing sector would grow around 9 percent in 2013. Now, however, the minister has felt the need to revise this figure down to 6.5 percent after meeting several other ministers. Issues that will limit growth of the manufacturing sector are higher minimum wages, the planned rise in subsidized fuel prices, and the lack of support through bank credits.

  • Indonesia's Manufacturing Growth in 2013 Has Not Met Target Yet

In the first quarter of 2013, Indonesia's manufacturing sector (excluding oil and gas) grew 6.69 percent (YoY). This growth figure is still far below the government's target of 9 percent growth in 2013. However, the minister of Industry, Muhammad Sulaeman Hidayat, remains optimistic that the nine percent growth target will be met in the second quarter of 2013 as production is increasing and investments have been realized. Analysts, however, expect the manufacturing sector to grow 7.14 percent this year (YoY).

  • Consumer Price Index Indonesia: Low Inflation Expected in April

It is highly unlikely to see the continuation of deflation in April. Last month (March 2017) Indonesia recorded 0.02 percent of deflation, primarily on the back of easing food prices amid the big harvest season. This harvest season will continue into April and therefore we expect few (to none) inflationary pressures stemming from food products. However, administered price adjustments (specifically another round of higher electricity tariffs in March) will impact of April's inflation figure, while consumer prices may also start to feel the impact of the approaching Ramadan month.

  • Agus Martowardojo: Indonesia's July 2014 Inflation Outpaces July Average

Bank Indonesia Governor Agus Martowardojo expects the country’s July 2014 inflation pace to come in the range of 0.80 to 1.20 percent (month-to-month). This relatively high inflation figure is caused by seasonal factors: the holy fasting month of Ramadan and Idul Fitri celebrations. A recent Bank Indonesia survey showed that inflation already reached 0.80 percent in the first week of July.
