Indonesia's economic growth in the second quarter of 2025 (Q2-2025) significantly exceeded our projection. While our projection was set in the range of 4.7-4.9 percent year-on-year (y/y), Indonesia’s Statistical Agency (BPS) reported on 5 August 2025 that the official growth rate was 5.12 percent (y/y) in Q2-2025.
Amid the hectic environment, with trade talks between Indonesia, the United States (US) and the European Union (EU), ongoing geopolitical turmoil in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, shifting political alliances, a US Federal Reserve that may hold its benchmark interest rate steady for longer, and subdued global economic growth, it is interesting to take a look at how the Indonesian economy is performing.
As usual, we are going to take a close look at the latest available macroeconomic data of Indonesia to assess the current state of the Indonesian economy. Last month, we came to the conclusion that –overall– conditions seemed a bit weakening (with most macroeconomic indicators revealing some softness), thus suggesting that economic growth is (further) slowing in Indonesia.

The long Idul Fitri holiday (that ends on 7 April 2025) somewhat disrupts our access to Indonesia’s macroeconomic data as much of the private and public sector is closed during this holiday (hence do not release any data during this period).
On Tuesday (18 March 2025), the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) decided to temporarily suspend trading as the benchmark Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) plunged 5 percent. Such trading halts target at stabilizing Indonesia's capital markets (as the rupiah was also dragged down by the capital outflows).
On 5 February 2025, the Statistical Agency of Indonesia (Badan Pusat Statistik, BPS) announced that Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP) was recorded at a growth rate of 5.03 percent year-on-year (y/y) in 2024. Those who follow our reports might be aware that we’ve been unable to obtain data regarding the foreign visitor arrivals into Indonesia since the start of 2025. The main problem seems to be that the publication of foreign tourism-related data has moved from Indonesia’s Statistical Agency (Badan Pusat Statistik, or BPS) to the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. But, unfortunately, this ministry hasn’t released any data (related to foreign visitors in 2025) on its website (yet).
The economic growth rate of Indonesia in the first quarter of 2025 (Q1-2025) came in slightly below our projection of 4.9 – 5.0 percent year-on-year (y/y). But, indeed, we had already detected a (general) weakening in internal and external conditions, which was reflected in the macroeconomic data of Indonesia that we discussed in our April 2025 report. And so, it was certainly not a shock.
Indonesia’s economic growth in the fourth quarter of 2024 was slightly better than we had anticipated. Just prior to the release of Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP) data on 5 February 2025 (by Badan Pusat Statistik, BPS), we revised our outlook for Indonesia’s Q4-2024 economic growth from 5.0 percent year-on-year (y/y) to the range of 4.9–5.0 percent (y/y) due to a number of weaker-than-estimated macroeconomic data.

In its World Economic Outlook (released in October 2024), the IMF stated that global economic growth is expected to remain stable, yet underwhelming, at 3.2 percent year-on-year (y/y) in 2024.
As usual, we look at the latest available macroeconomic data of Indonesia to assess the strength of the national economy. Those who follow this monthly article should know that we are quite optimistic about the Indonesian economy as the majority of data are showing positive trends.
Indonesia’s economic growth in the second quarter of 2024 (Q2-2024) was good, although slightly below our projection of 5.1 percent year-on-year (y/y). According to the latest gross domestic product (GDP) data, which were released by Indonesia’s Statistical Agency (in Indonesian: Badan Pusat Statistik, BPS) on 5 August 2024, the Indonesian economy expanded by 5.05 percent (y/y) in Q2-2024.
Before we take a look at the latest macroeconomic data from Indonesia, first there is some good news to share as both the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Asian Development Bank (ADB) decided to revise up their projections for the Indonesian economy in 2023.
