The higher ranking of Soekarno-Hatta Airport in 2013 is a sign of the growing aviation industry in Indonesia. Traditionally, the domestic aviation industry grows twice as fast as the overall economy. In 2013, Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew 5.78 percent (year on year). Deputy Minister of Transportation Bambang Susantono recently mentioned that domestic air passengers grew by an average of 13.8 percent per year between 2009 and 2013 and international air passengers at 19.3 percent per year during the same period.

As the airport has been operating at overcapacity in recent years, a large-scale renovation has been underway. Terminals I and II are being renovated to enlarge passenger capacity to 18 and 19 million people respectively (from nine million each now). Terminal III will be able to handle 25 million passengers after renovations have finished in 2015 (from four million). Meanwhile, flight capacity is being expanded from 64 flights per hour in 2013 to 72 flights per hour this year and to 85 flights per hour in 2015.

In line with the growth of the aviation industry, Indonesia has become one of the world's largest aircraft buyers. Procurement of aircrafts in Indonesia grew at an average of 11.8 percent per year between 2009 and 2013. In 2014, at least 250 new aircrafts will be delivered to Indonesian airlines.

Statistics Indonesia recently released a report that mentioned that air passengers in Indonesia in 2013 totaled 68.7 million, thus growing 3.5 percent from the previous year (66.4 million). This involves 55.7 million domestic air passengers and 13 million foreign passengers.
