Across the giant Archipelago festive events are organized that include music and - something which is very popular and always attracts large crowds - contests or races, such as pole or tree climbing (with the top usually being very slippery), rope pulling (tug of war), and fried crackers (krupuk) eating competitions (with the crackers dangling in the air while contestants are not allowed to use their hands).

However, in the days around the 74th anniversary tensions related to West Papua flared up. Therefore, it is worth taking a look at the latest incidents and put them in historic perspective.
