According to commercial real estate company Colliers International Indonesia, more expatriates are renting houses in Indonesia, specifically (South) Jakarta, since the second half of 2017. The rising number of expats who rent houses in Indonesia is due to expansion plans of manufacturing and automotive companies.
Ferry Salanto, Senior Associate Director at Colliers International Indonesia, said South Jakarta remains the most popular choice for foreign workers in the Greater Jakarta region in terms of housing because this area has all the facilities that are needed by expats, such as international schools, luxurious shopping malls, and golf clubs.
Colliers detected an increase in rental prices in the following locations, all located in South Jakarta, due to rising demand: Cipete, Cilandak, Pondok Indah, and Kebayoran Baru.
Salanto notes that most of the expats that reside in the Greater Jakarta region are from China. This is in line with the various infrastructure and property projects that are being constructed by Chinese companies. Meanwhile, Salanto believes that - in the future - those expats that reside in Indonesia (specifically Jakarta) will particularly work in Indonesia's rapidly developing e-commerce and information technology industries.
Overall, however, Colliers expects the number of foreign workers in Indonesia to decline in the years ahead as the government is making it tougher for companies to employ expats.
