One of Indonesia's biggest companies in terms of market capitalization on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, Unilever Indonesia, reported a decline in net profit and sales in the first quarter of 2018. The company's latest corporate earnings report gives rise to concerns that household consumption is yet to show a rebound in Indonesia.
Unilever Indonesia, one of Indonesia's biggest consumer goods companies, recorded IDR 7 trillion (approx. USD $515 million) in net profit over full-year 2017, up 9.6 percent year-on-year (y/y) from net profit in the preceding year. These figures are unaudited. The audited FY-2017 corporate earnings are expected to be released toward the end of February 2018.
The five top brands that are purchased most often by Indonesian households are Indomie, Mie Sedaap, Royco, So Klin and Frisian Flag. This is the result of research conducted by Kantar Worldpanel (KW), a global research firm that investigates consumers' purchasing behaviour. Fabrice Carrasco, KW’s Managing Director for Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines, wrote in a statement received on Monday that more than 90 percent of Indonesian households buy the five above-mentioned brands.
One of Indonesia’s largest consumer goods producers, Unilever Indonesia, recorded better than expected sales and net profit growth in the first quarter of 2015, signalling that purchasing power of Indonesians - amid the country’s economic slowdown - may not be as weak as previously expected. The local unit of Netherlands-based Unilever Holding B.V. attributed its strong performance to lower finance costs (interest and other borrowing costs), rising sales, and a higher average selling price.
Unilever Indonesia, a major consumer goods producer of Indonesia, plans to distribute IDR 2.54 trillion (USD $260.11 million) in final dividend to its shareholders. The dividend, which is equivalent to IDR 334 per share, will be paid out on 13 July 2013. Together with the company's interim dividend, which was paid out on 20 December 2012, Unilever Indonesia uses its full net income of 2012 (IDR 4.83 trillion) to please the shareholders. Unilever Indonesia Holding BV has an 85 percent stake in the company.

Indonesia's main stock index (IHSG) fell 0.86 percent to 4,777.45 on Monday (01/07) as eight of the nine sectoral indices weakened. Only Indonesia's finance index managed to post an upward movement. Several big cap stocks ended the trading day with large losses, such as Unilever Indonesia (-3.90%) or Telekomunikasi Indonesia (-3.11%). The consumption sector was one of the worst performing sectors in Indonesia yesterday as can be seen in Indofood Sukses Makmur's shares, which fell 6.80 percent.
