  • 2016 State Budget Draft Indonesia: Capital Injections State Companies

    Through capital injections the Indonesian government aims to enhance the role of various state-owned enterprises (SOEs) within the process of economic development. In the recently unveiled 2016 State Budget draft, which still requires approval from Indonesia’s House of Representatives, the government allocated a total of IDR 48.2 trillion (approx. USD $3.6 billion) to 24 SOEs in five priority sectors: food security, infrastructure & maritime development, energy security, strategic industry development, and national economic autonomy.

  • Nearly 20 Million Indonesians still Plagued by Hunger

    Currently there are still 19.4 million Indonesians suffering from hunger each day, or, one-third of an estimated 60 million people that suffer from hunger in Southeast Asia. The figures are results of research conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Mark Smulders, FAO Representative in Indonesia, said that there remains much work to be done. The priority of the FAO is to create ‘Generation Zero Hunger’ and to ensure that Indonesians get enough nutrition to live a productive and healthy life.

  • Indonesia under Jokowi’s Cabinet: Technocrats vs Party Politicians

    Indonesia’s seventh president Joko Widodo (better known as Jokowi), who will take office in late October 2014 thereby replacing incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), said that during the next five years the Indonesian government will consist of 34 ministries of which 18 are headed by technocrats and 16 by “professional” party politicians. This structure is basically the same as that of the current SBY-led government. In modern Indonesian history the distinction between technocrats and party politicians has been an important one.

  • Broader View of Poverty Underscores Critical Long-Term Challenge

    Poverty will remain a critical and big challenge for Asia and the Pacific in the coming decades, requiring a greater focus on efforts to address food insecurity and economic vulnerability, says a new Asian Development Bank (ADB) report, entitled Key Indicators for Asia and the Pacific 2014. Rapid economic growth in the region has led to a sharp improvement in living standards. In Indonesia, the national poverty rate declined from 14.2 percent to 11.3 percent over the past five years.

  • Election Indonesia: Last Debate Subianto-Rajasa vs Jokowi-Kalla

    On Saturday 5 July 2014, the fifth presidential debate between the two presidential pairs took place. Candidates Prabowo Subianto (joined by running mate Hatta Rajasa) and Joko “Jokowi” Widodo (joined by running mate Jusuf Kalla) faced off in the last debate. The theme of this debate was 'energy, food security and environment'. Sudharto P. Hadi, Professor of Sociology at the Diponegoro University in Semarang (Central Java) was the moderator. On Wednesday 9 July 2014, the Indonesian people will go to the ballot boxes to elect their next leader.

  • Project for Fisheries and Aquaculture for Food Security in Indonesia

    The Indonesian government and the Netherlands-based Wageningen University and Research Center will cooperate in a new bilateral fisheries and aquaculture project. This project, called 'Project for Fisheries and Aquaculture for Food Security in Indonesia' aims to enhance food security and reduce malnutrition in Indonesia through increasing the availability of various fish products on Indonesia's domestic market. The Netherlands and Indonesia together contribute 9 million euro to finance the project.

  • Bali Package Important Step for the WTO's Doha Development Round

    After two long days of intense negotiations, Director of the World Trade Organization Roberto Azevedo announced that the discussions have resulted in the Bali declaration on Saturday morning (07/12). The agreement between the participants were put in 10 documents, known as the Bali Package, and cover trade facilitation (trade liberalizations), agriculture, cotton and development. Azevedo stressed the importance of the agreement when he said "[for the] first time in our history, the WTO has truly delivered."

  • APEC Joint Statement: Results of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting

    The twenty-first APEC Economic Leaders Meeting, chaired by Indonesia's president Bambang Susilo Yudhoyono, has been concluded and in the words of the president the Summit "went on successfully and was indeed very productive." During the two-day Summit the central theme of APEC 2013: “Resilient Asia-Pacific, Engine of Global Growth” was discussed thoroughly and a number of strategic points were agreed upon. Seven of these points are highlighted in the APEC joint statement‏, delivered by Yudhoyono on Tuesday (08/10).

    The APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), a permanent high-level business advisory group that is created by the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), has given five recommendations to the 21 member countries of the APEC. These recommendations involve regional economic integration, sustainable development, entrepreneurship as well as small and medium enterprises (SMEs), an economic and banking forum, and lastly, a dialogue in the industry sector concerning scientific innovation.
