Sementara itu, harga minyak jatuh dan dollar Amerika Serikat (AS) memperpanjang kerugian terhadap sebagian besar mata uang negara-negara berkembang.

  • Indonesian Stocks & Rupiah Weaken as Fed Opens Door to December Rate Hike

Indonesian assets are leading declines in Asia's equity and currency markets on today's trading day after a 'hawkish' statement released by the Federal Reserve indicated that the US will not raise its Fed Fund Rate yet, but does seem to open a door to a December interest rate hike. Despite the good performance of US stocks on Wednesday (28/10), most Asian markets were down today. Moreover, solid factory output in Japan reduced chances of further stimulus measures in Japan (Japan's central bank is to meet this Friday).

  • Indonesian Stocks & Rupiah Update: What Influenced Markets Today?

Most Asian stocks declined on Wednesday (28/10) as markets are waiting for results of the Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting (later today the Fed will release a statement). Although analysts and investors seem confident that the US central bank will delay raising its key Fed Fund Rate (and will not provide a clear signal about the timing of higher rates), markets remain cautious. Moreover, oil prices fell to two-month lows overnight.

  • Indonesian Stocks Down Ahead of Fed Meeting; Rupiah Strengthens

Most Asian stock indices were in red territory on Tuesday (27/10) ahead of the Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting (scheduled to start today) and following the sluggish performance of US and European stocks on Monday. Investors seem to engage in profit-taking after global equity markets hit a two-month high on China's interest rates cut, the European Central Bank (ECB)'s plan to add stimulus to boost inflation, and expectation of more stimulus from Japan's central bank as well as a delay in higher US interest rates.

  • Market Update Indonesia: Stocks Up, Rupiah Weaker on China Rate Cut

Most Asian stock indices strengthened on Monday (26/10) as China cut the one-year lending rate by 0.25 percent to 4.35 percent (the sixth interest rate cut within a 12-month period) and cut banks' reserve requirement ratio by 0.50 percent to 17.5 percent. On the one hand this move should boost economic expansion in the world's second-largest economy. On the other hand, however, the move is one the the many signals that the economy of China is weakening further and heading for a 25-year low growth pace in 2015.

  • Indonesia Stock Market & Rupiah: Strong on ECB Stimulus Expectation

In line with other Asian emerging assets, Indonesian stocks and the rupiah strengthened on Friday (23/10). The positive performance is mainly on the back of more stimulus measures by key central banks. Yesterday (22/10), Mario Draghi, Head of the European Central Bank (ECB), said the ECB may increase stimulus measures at the December policy meeting to raise inflation and boost the economy of the Eurozone.

  • Indonesia Stock Market & Rupiah Update: China Concerns Persist

With the exception of Japan, the majority of stock markets in Asia were under pressure on Wednesday (21/10) on concern about China's economic growth as Japan's exports to China fell 3.5 percent year-on-year in September. Today, it was announced that Japan posted a USD $95 billion trade deficit in September, worse than previously estimated, primarily on weakening exports due to slowing economic growth in China. However, Japanese stocks rose on stimulus hopes.

  • Indonesian Rupiah and Other Emerging Market Currencies Weakening

The Indonesian rupiah is not having a good day as it was down 1.05 percent to IDR 13,659 per US dollar by 10:45 am local Jakarta time (Bloomberg Dollar Index) on Tuesday (20/10), weakening the most in a week. In line with most other emerging market currencies in Asia, the rupiah is falling presumably on concern about weak economic growth in China. Yesterday, Chinese authorities announced the world's second-largest economy expanded 6.9 percent (y/y) in Q3-2015. This result is slightly better than estimates but does also constitute a six-year low, hence negatively affected exports of its trading partners.

  • Indonesia Stock Market & Rupiah Update: Up on China GDP Growth

Emerging market assets, including Indonesian stocks and the rupiah, are being supported today by the release of China's official third quarter gross domestic product (GDP) growth figure. The economy of China expanded 6.9 percent (y/y) in Q3-2015, slightly beating expectations (at 6.8 percent y/y) on relatively robust spending by Chinese consumers. Most emerging market assets strengthened after the news as a slightly better Chinese economy (implying higher Chinese demand) impacts positively on other countries in the Asian region on expectation of improving export performance.

  • Strong Performance Rupiah, Bank Indonesia to Hold Policy Meeting

After Islamic New Year celebrations, Indonesia’s financial markets reopened on Thursday (15/10). The sharp appreciation of the Indonesian rupiah on Thursday morning is remarkable. Emerging markets assets are still gaining on signs that the Federal Reserve will not raise US interest rates in the short-term.

  • Despite Profit Taking, Jakarta Composite Index Up on Tuesday

After several days of strong performance, Indonesia's benchmark stock index (known as the Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG) felt the impact of profit taking on Tuesday (16/04). As a consquence, the IHSG's upward movement was limited and unable to completely close the gap at 4,829-4,906. At the start of the trading day, the index opened positively, but during the day - when a number of Asian indices were down - the IHSG's performance was curbed. Indonesia's benchmark index gained 0.11 percent to 4,870.21 points.

  • Indonesian Rupiah Exchange Rate Update: Depreciates 0.23% on Monday

On Monday (14/04), the Indonesian rupiah exchange rate depreciated 0.23 percent to IDR 11,440 per US dollar according to the Bloomberg Dollar Index. This performance was in line with most other emerging Asian currencies, which weakened against the US dollar due to broad strength in the greenback as well as risk aversion. The rupiah - still the best performing emerging Asian currency so far this year - depreciated on dollar demand from local importers (while state-run banks were reported to engage in rupiah buying).

  • Stocks Rebound but Indonesian Rupiah Exchange Rate Extends Depreciation

The Indonesian rupiah exchange rate extends its depreciation on Friday (11/04) after market participants showed their concern about Indonesia's legislative election result on Wednesday (09/04). As the election did not result in a clear victory for the PDI-P (the main opposition party which intends to nominate popular Jakarta Governor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo as presidential candidate), the fragmented outcome is expected to lead to continued political uncertainty ahead of Indonesia's presidential election on 9 July 2014.

  • Indonesian Rupiah Exchange Rate Up Ahead of Parliamentary Election

Most emerging market currencies, including the Indonesian rupiah exchange rate, appreciated against the US dollar on Tuesday (08/04) due to carry trade (meaning the selling of low-yield currencies for higher-yielding assets) and expected stimulus from China's government to boost its economy (Chinese shares in fact gained 2.2 percent on this stimulus speculation). The rupiah appreciated 0.14 percent to IDR 11,289 per US dollar based on the Bloomberg Dollar Index, partly due to variety of domestic factors.

By the end of Friday's trading day (28/03), the Indonesian rupiah exchange rate appreciated 0.75 percent to IDR 11,361 per US dollar based on the Bloomberg Dollar Index. At the end of March 2014, the rupiah is still the best-performing Asian currency this year, outperforming 24 emerging-market currencies that are tracked by Bloomberg. Since 31 December 2013, the rupiah appreciated nearly seven percent against the US dollar as an easing current account deficit and slowing inflation triggered capital inflows into Southeast Asia's largest economy.

  • Rupiah Falls on Fed Policy; Market Waiting for Indonesia's Economic Data

The Indonesian rupiah exchange rate depreciated 0.31 percent to IDR 11,447 per US dollar on Thursday (27/03) based on the Bloomberg Dollar Index. The currency's strong performance in February and the first half of March, supported by Indonesia's easing current account deficit and inflation, has met resistance due to global concern about the aggressive US Federal Reserve monetary tightening (winding down its quantitative easing program by another chunk of USD $10 billion as well as possible US interest rate hikes in 2015 and 2016).

  • Contrary to Most Emerging Currencies, Indonesian Rupiah Depreciates

On Wednesday (26/03), most emerging Asian currencies appreciated against the US dollar as the region's shares hit a two-week high on upbeat US economic data in combination with reduced concern over the crisis in Crimea (Ukraine). However, the Indonesian rupiah exchange rate was one of the exceptions to this trend on today's trading day. Based on the Bloomberg Dollar Index, the rupiah had depreciated 0.16 percent to IDR 11,412 at 16:15 local Jakarta time. Meanwhile, the Chinese yuan recovered some of its earlier losses.

Jakarta Composite Index down due to Lower US Manufacturing PMI

Despite technical indicators suggesting further upward movement of Indonesia's benchmark stock index (known as the Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG), a positive performance of the index was blocked by external factors. Several Asian stock indices were down responding to Markit's lower US manufacturing PMI (slipping to 55.5 from 57.1 in February 2014). Similarly, China and the Eurozone's manufacturing data showed slowing growth. Continued appreciation of the rupiah exchange rate managed to limit the decline of the IHSG.

  • New Week Starts with Strong Indonesian Rupiah and Climbing IHSG

At the start of the new week, Indonesia's benchmark stock index (Jakarta Composite Index or IHSG) was able to continue to climb, supported by positive Asian indices. Today, investors took advantage of discounted stocks in Asia as markets had fallen after the Federal Reserve's announcement last week that the quantitative easing program would be wound down further as well as a possible US interest rate hike in 2015 and 2016. However, the IHSG was also vulnerable to profit taking. Therefore, today's gain was limited.
