  • Paper Exports of Indonesia Fall on US & Aussie Anti-Dumping Duty

    Indonesian paper manufacturers may see their exports fall further in 2017 as Australia and the United States have implemented high anti-dumping import duties on paper from Indonesia. Liana Bratasida, Executive Director Indonesia Pulp & Paper Association (APKI), said several local paper manufacturers stopped shipments to Australia after the country implemented anti-dumping import duties in the range of 2.4 - 72.8 percent in December 2016. Reportedly, it has become not feasible for these companies to continue the export of paper.

    Although not final yet, the United States plans to impose anti-dumping duties on imports of uncoated paper sheets from Indonesia. On Monday (11/01) the US Commerce Department said it plans to introduce anti-import duties in the range of 2.05 percent to 222.46 percent for uncoated paper sheet imports from Indonesia, Australia, China, Portugal and Brazil. On 22 February 2016 the final decision is expected to be announced by the US Commerce Department.

    Bank Pembangunan Asia (Asian Development Bank/ADB) mengumumkan telah mengurangi proyeksi pertumbuhan ekonomi 2015 dan 2016 baik untuk Republik Rakyat Tiongkok (RRT) maupun negara-negara berkembang Asia lainnya karena perlambatan perekonomian yang berkelanjutan di negara dengan ekonomi terbesar kedua di dunia ini. Ekspansi perekonomian RRT diproyeksikan untuk mencapai 7% pada basis year-on-year (y/y) di 2015 dan 6,8% (y/y) di 2016. Kedua proyeksi ini turun 0,2% poin dari proyeksi ADB sebelumnya.

    Yesterday's rising indices on Wall Street, high expectations of companies' financial reports and positive statements regarding economic growth in China resulted in a good day at the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX).     Indonesia's ceramic industry recorded sales amounting to IDR 14 trillion (USD $1.4 billion) in the first six months of 2013. This implies a 27 percent increase compared to ceramic sales in the same period in 2012. The increase is particularly caused by higher sales prices in January and March 2013 which were introduced to mitigate higher gas and electricity tariffs as well as higher minimum wages.
