  • Bank Indonesia Detects Lower Foreign Currency Demand

    Although causing waves of both criticism and support, Indonesia's central bank implemented BI Regulation No. 17/3/PBI/2015 regarding the Mandatory Use of the Rupiah in Indonesia on 1 July 2015 thus restricting the use of foreign currencies in transactions conducted within Indonesia in an effort to deepen the domestic rupiah market and stabilize the rupiah. After nearly seven months in effect the new regulation seems to have worked and lessened domestic demand for the US dollar according to a Bank Indonesia official.

  • Indonesia's 9th Economic Stimulus Package: Logistics Costs

    The government of Indonesia unveiled its ninth economic stimulus package on Wednesday (27/01) in an effort to boost the nation's economic growth. The ninth package aims to combat Indonesia's high logistics costs hence improving competitiveness of domestic industries while making Indonesia's investment climate more attractive. It is estimated that Indonesia's logistics costs are equivalent to around 25 percent of the nation's gross domestic product (GDP), among the highest in the ASEAN region.

  • Peraturan Bank Indonesia ‘Kewajiban Penggunaan Rupiah’ Mulai Berlaku

    Pada 1 Juli 2015, Peraturan Bank Indonesia No. 17/3/PBI/2015 tentang Kewajiban Penggunaan Rupiah di Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia mulai berlaku. Peraturan BI ini, ditandatangani pada 31 Maret 2015, melarang penggunaan mata uang asing dalam transaksi di Indonesia dalam rangka memperdalam pasar domestik rupiah, menstabilkan rupiah (yang telah melemah terhadap dollar AS), dan mendorong ekspansi perekonomian. Undang-Undang sebelumnya (UU No. 7/2011) mengizinkan pihak-pihak yang terlibat dalam kontrak untuk membuat kesepakatan menggunakan mata uang lainnya (bukan rupiah) untuk pembayaran.

  • New Regulation on Mandatory Use of Rupiah in Indonesia

    On March 31, 2015, Bank Indonesia issued regulation number 17/3/PBI/2015 concerning Mandatory Use of Rupiah in the Territory of Indonesia (BI Regulation). In the much discussed Law number 7 of 2011 concerning Currency the mandatory use of rupiah in Indonesia was already regulated, however could be exempted in case the contract parties had agreed in writing to the terms of payment in a currency other than rupiah. Under the new BI regulation the terms on the use of foreign currencies are further restricted. In this column we discuss the most important changes based on the BI Regulation.
