As expected, Indonesian consumer prices rebounded in March 2025 after Southeast Asia’s largest economy had experienced two straight months of significant deflation in January and February 2025 (see table 1).
On Tuesday (08 April 2025) the stock market reopened in Indonesia after the long Idul Fitri holiday. And so, it was the first time investors could respond to global turmoil that occured after US President Donald Trump announced steep import tariffs for goods shipped into the United States (feared to trigger a global trade war and global economic recession).
Markets in Indonesia were closed for the national Idul Fitri holiday (the festivities that mark the end of the Ramadan month) between 28 March and 7 April 2025, meaning they haven't digested the controversial tariffs that were announced by US President Donald Trump on 2 April 2025.
The agricultural sector plays an important economic role for Indonesia as this sector generates jobs (thus incomes) for dozens of millions of Indonesians, delivers much-needed staple food crops (that are part of Indonesians’ daily diets and crucial input materials for domestic food processing), while generating tax income and lucrative foreign exchange earnings through export activities.
