In a press release the coffee chain stated "building on the cashless payment system Starbucks Indonesia introduced in 2013 with Starbucks Card, Starbucks Indonesia Mobile App for iPhone and Android enables customers to quickly pay for in-store purchases by scanning the bar-code linked to a registered Starbucks Card. Via the app, customers cannot only pay for a beverage, snack or sandwich in the Starbucks store but are also able to locate the nearest Starbucks store and receive the latest information on Starbucks products.

Roger van Tongeren, Vice President of Marketing and Operations for Starbucks Indonesia, said "we are pleased to introduce the Starbucks Indonesia Mobile App to our local customers, offering a fast and convenient way to pay for purchases, earn Stars, and much more. It is the latest Starbucks innovation which aims to provide an enhanced experience and meet customers’ needs in the digital space, while continuing to provide an exceptional experience in our stores."

With rising Internet and smartphone penetration in Indonesia, digital experiences (a new way to connect with customers) will unlock new business opportunities for businesses.

Earlier, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said the global coffee chain operator is the undisputed leader in mobile commerce. Currently, around 21 percent of Starbucks transactions are done on mobile devices, either in store at the point of sale (via the app) or using the Starbucks’ app (with Mobile Order & Pay). These payment methods aim at making transactions and the order process easier.
