Anyone that has been reading the news headlines in the financial markets over the last few weeks has undoubtedly turned some of their attention to the possibility that Great Britain might elect to leave the European Union. In a plenary session on Tuesday (28/06), Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) passed the controversial Tax Amnesty Bill into law as well as the revised 2016 state budget. The Indonesian government will be relieved to see the Tax Amnesty Bill come into effect on 1 July 2016 (ending in May 2017) as it expects the bill to boost tax revenue this year by IDR 165 trillion (approx. USD $12.4 billion). Through tax incentives and the pardoning of tax crimes, the tax amnesty program makes it attractive for tax evaders to declare their offshore assets and repatriate these into Indonesia.
The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) is serious about becoming the largest stock exchange in the ASEAN region - in terms of transaction value and the number of listed companies - by the year 2020. Currently, Singapore remains the largest stock exchange in the ASEAN region with a market capitalization of about USD $640 billion (in 2015), nearly twice the size of Indonesia's stock exchange (the market capitalization is the number of total outstanding shares at the exchange multiplied by their stock prices).
When we are looking at economic forecasts for potential growth prospects in Indonesia, it makes sense to have an idea of what is happening in the peripheral regions. China is still used as a firm indicator of where we are headed with emerging markets and here we will look at some of the reasons why the People's Bank of China's (PBOC) is still expecting growth even if potentially negative factors occur.
