What Do We Discuss in the Report?

The Iran War that erupted at the very end of February 2026 has significant implications for the world. Most notably, global crude oil prices (and gas prices) have skyrocketed after traffic through the Strait of Hormuz was disrupted. For energy importing countries such as Indonesia this is a major fiscal problem, particularly because Indonesia still subsidizes a significant portion of gasoline that is used by the Indonesian people (specifically Pertalite).

The fiscal implications and widening budget deficit are important topics that we discuss in the March 2026 report, but there is also the threat of (imported) inflation as energy prices are inputs for essentially all products and services in society.

Another topic that we discuss is the palm oil sector of Indonesia. Palm oil is a crucial asset to the Indonesian economy. However, this sector is experiencing a couple of major challenges. At the same time, there are still many opportunities available.

As usual, we also discuss various macroeconomic indicators to assess the current state of the Indonesian economy. This includes inflation, retail sales, consumer confidence, manufacturing, foreign visitor arrivals, and more.
