At its latest monetary policy meeting, held on 18-19 April 2022, Bank Indonesia decided to leave its interest rates unchanged in an effort to facilitate the ongoing economic rebound. The benchmark interest rate (the BI 7-day reverse repo rate) was maintained at 3.50 percent, while the deposit facility and lending facility rates were kept at 2.75 percent and 4.25 percent, respectively.
Indonesian markets are back open after the week-long Idul Fitri holiday. And, it was not the greatest opening, with Indonesian stocks, bonds, and the rupiah under heavy pressure. Moreover, Indonesian inflation accelerated quite rapidly in April 2022.
For the first time since early November 2020 – which is around five months ago – the Indonesian rupiah depreciated beyond the IDR 14,500 per US dollar level. It is a threshold that makes Indonesians a bit concerned.
The Indonesian rupiah had a good start of the month in November 2020. Based on Bank Indonesia’s Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate (Jisdor), the rupiah appreciated 3.4 percent against the US dollar in the first two trading weeks of November 2020.
The Indonesian rupiah rate, which had been under extreme pressure amid the start of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis in March 2020, rebounded in April 2020 and continued this rebound throughout May 2020 (albeit at a less impressive pace).
While nearly all stock markets in Asia are in positive territory, Indonesia's benchmark Jakarta Composite Index has remained in deep red territory on Friday (20.03.2020). And while the US dollar halted its eight-day rally, the Indonesian rupiah exchange rate continued to weaken beyond the (psychologically sensitive) IDR 16,000 per US dollar threshold (after Bank Indonesia cut its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 4.50 percent one day earlier). Market participants seemingly show an alarming loss of confidence in Indonesian assets.
While the Indonesian rupiah rate had retreated against the US dollar in November 2019 amid an increase in uncertainty in international markets, the Indonesian currency managed to end the year 2019 on a positive note.
The Indonesian rupiah rate appreciated modestly in September 2019. The currency started the month at the level of IDR 14,237 per US dollar and ended the month at IDR 14,174 per US dollar (data taken from Bank Indonesia’s benchmark Jisdor rate). In other words, the rupiah strengthened 0.44 percent against greenback in the month of September 2019.
Emerging market assets in Asia remained under pressure on Thursday (16.05.2019), with risk appetite being particularly undermined by rising concerns over USA-China trade tensions.

It seems that the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IHSG) was blessed by the Chinese new year celebrations as it closed higher on Monday than on the previous trading day. This is a better performance than usual on the days around the new year. If we take a look at the period 2008-2012, the IHSG declined three times on the day before new year, and twice on the day after. This year, the IHSG declined on the day before by -0.26% and increased by 0.27 on the day after.
After rallying for three days to try to end on a new resistance level, the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IHSG) finally had to retreat. As we suspected, the index weakened after its record high. Moreover, American and European indices were weak on Thursday, thus influencing the performance of the IHSG on Friday. Lastly, a number of Asian companies reported weak corporate reports that subsequently impacted on Asian stock indices, including the IHSG.
The positive response of Asian stock markets towards manufacture data from Europe, and the rebound of American and European stocks turned the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IHSG) back into green territory. Positive market sentiments impacted - as usual - on commodity stocks, particularly mining stocks, and which thus gained the most: Vale Indonesia (INCO), Antam (ANTM), Timah (TINS), and Resource Alam Indonesia (KKGI) all increased significantly.
On Tuesday's trading day, the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IHSG) ended lower as widespread profit taking coloured transactions. Other Asian stock indices, such as the Nikkei (Japan) and Hang Seng (Hong Kong), fell hard and impacted on the performance of the IHSG. The publication of Indonesia's 2012 GDP growth also brought negative sentiments as its result (6.2%) was below expectations.
