  • Indonesia Investment Coordination Board Targets 15% Investment Growth

    Government investment service agency Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) targets IDR 524 trillion (USD $42 billion) worth of investments in 2015, a 15 percent growth from estimated investment realization this year (IDR 450 trillion). BKPM is optimistic that after the ‘political year’ of 2014 (due to the legislative and presidential elections) the new government will push for the implementation of various infrastructure projects such as toll roads, harbours and airports, thus making Indonesia more attractive to foreign investors.

  • Business Trips & Tourism in Indonesia Boost Hotel Development

    As the number of foreign tourists rise rapidly and there is increasing demand for conferences, exhibitions and business meetings, Indonesia will see a massive inflow of investments for the construction of hotels and condominium hotels (condominium hotels combine features of apartments and hotels). In 2015, the value of new (condo) hotels projects is estimated at IDR 38.5 trillion (USD $3.2 billion), up 57.3 percent from last year.   • Singapore Largest Foreign Investor in Indonesia in the First Half of 2014

    According to the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Singapore is the largest foreign investor in Indonesia. In the first half of 2014, Indonesia received USD $3.4 billion worth of investments from Singapore. In total, foreign companies invested IDR 150 trillion (USD $12.9 billion) in Indonesia during the first six months of 2014. This is the highest amount of foreign investment that Indonesia has ever managed to attract in a six-month period. It also diluted fears that the legislative and presidential elections would cause a temporary slowdown.

  • Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Indonesia Hits New Record in Q2-2014

    According to data from the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), total investment realization in Indonesia grew 16.4 percent (year-on-year) in the second quarter of 2014 to IDR 116.2 trillion (USD $10.0 billion), the highest ever quarterly investment result and thus proved that Indonesia’s legislative and presidential elections in 2014 were no reason to postpone direct investments. Foreign direct investment (FDI) was recorded at IDR 78.0 trillion (USD $6.7 billion), while domestic direct investment (DDI) was IDR 38.2 trillion (USD $3.3 billion).

  • BKPM Optimistic about Q2-2014 Investment Realization in Indonesia

    The Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), the investment service agency of the Indonesian government, is optimistic that investment realization in Indonesia (Southeast Asia’s largest economy) can surpass the level of IDR $100 trillion (USD $8.5 billion) in the second semester of 2014. Sectors that see increased investments in this quarter are the consumer goods and mining sectors. Total investments in Indonesia in the first quarter of 2014 reached IDR 106.6 trillion, an all-time record high quarterly investment realization.

  • Indonesia Revises Negative Investment List to Boost Foreign Investments

    The Indonesian government has revised the country's Negative Investment List (Daftar Negatif Investasi) in order to boost foreign and domestic direct investments (FDIs) into Indonesia. The revision, which is not fully published yet, is based on Presidential Decree No 39 - 2014 on the List of Open and Closed Sectors for Investments (Perpres 39 - 2014 tentang Daftar Bidang Usaha Tertutup dan Bidang Usaha Terbuka dengan Persyaratan di Bidang Penanaman Modal). However, for some sectors the maximum limit of foreign ownership has been curbed.

  • Revision of Indonesia's Negative Investment List to Attract Investment

    Chairman of the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Mahendra Siregar said on Thursday (24/04) that Indonesia's Negative Investment List (Daftar Negatif Investasi), which stipulates which sectors in the Indonesian economy are open to foreign investment as well as the percentage of foreign ownership permitted, has been revised. The list was revised through a Presidential Decree earlier this week. The revision means that the limit of foreign ownership in several sectors will be raised.

    The government of Indonesia announced on Tuesday (24/12) that increased levels of foreign direct investments will be allowed in the country’s airports, pharmaceutical industries, power plants, and toll roads.   • Indonesian Government Planning to Revise the Negative Investment List

    The Indonesian government is in the process of revising the country's Negative Investment List (the list that states which sectors of the economy are closed to foreign investment). Head of the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Mahendra Siregar, said that a number of (sub) sectors, previously closed to foreign investment, will be opened up this year. These sectors include telecommunication, financial institutions, pharmaceuticals, tourism, airport and seaport transportation services and management, healthcare, and advertising.

  • Foreign Direct Investment Contracts in Indonesia in Q2-2018

    Based on the latest data from Indonesia’s Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), total direct investment (foreign direct investment + domestic direct investment) in Indonesia was rather subdued in the second quarter of 2018, rising by a modest 3.1 percent year-on-year (y/y) to IDR 173.6 trillion (approx. USD $13.1 billion, using the IDR 13,400 per US dollar exchange rate that was set in the 2018 State Budget). As a consequence, Indonesia only achieved 47.3 percent of its full-year 2018 investment realization target in the first half of 2018, thus chances are rather big that the full-year target will not be achieved. It would be the first time Southeast Asia’s largest economy misses its investment realization target in many years.

  • Direct Investment in Indonesia Rebounds in Second Quarter 2017

    The Investment Coordinating Board of Indonesia (in Indonesian: Badan Koordinasi Penanaman Modal, or BKPM) reported that total direct investment realization in Indonesia was recorded at IDR 170.9 trillion in the second quarter of 2017. This constitutes a 12.7 percent growth pace from IDR 151.6 trillion worth of total direct investment in the same quarter one year earlier. Thomas Lembong, Head of BKPM, said investment realization managed to absorb 345,323 Indonesian workers in Q2-2017.

    According to the latest data from Indonesia's Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), investment realization (consisting of both foreign and domestic direct investment) in Indonesia grew 10.7 percent (y/y) to IDR 155.3 trillion in the third quarter of 2016. Cumulatively, investment realization in Indonesia stands at 453.4 trillion in the first nine months of 2016, achieving about 76 percent of the full-year target (IDR 594.8 trillion). Most likely, the BKPM's full-year target will be achieved.

    According to the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), the government agency that provides investment services and forms the primary interface between the Indonesian government and businesses, it has assisted 59 companies through the three-hour licensing service that was started on 11 January 2016. Originally, this service was only available to big investors who either invest at least IDR 100 billion (approx. USD $7.5 million) or generate 1,000 new job positions for Indonesian workers.     After Japan was disappointed by not being awarded the contract to build a high-speed railway between Indonesia's capital city of Jakarta and Bandung (West Java), the Indonesian government now plans to offer the revitalization of the northern Java railway to Japan. Another project that is expected to be offered to Japan is the Patimban seaport project in Subang (West Java).   • Unemployment in Indonesia Affected by Slowing Economic Growth

    Amid continued slowing economic growth unemployment in Indonesia increased in February 2015. On Tuesday (05/05), Statistics Indonesia announced that the country’s unemployment rate rose to 5.81 percent, up from 5.70 percent in February last year. However, compared to August 2014 - when unemployment was recorded at 5.94 percent - relative unemployment in Indonesia actually declined. Statistics Indonesia releases data on unemployment twice per year covering the unemployment rate in the months February and August.
