    Domestic car sales in Indonesia were slightly down in 2014 compared to the previous year.   • Indonesia's 2014 Annual Car Sales Fall on Bleak Economy & Fuel Hike

    Domestic car sales in Indonesia declined 15 percent to 91,449 vehicles in November 2014 (from the same month last year). Declining car sales in Southeast Asia’s largest economy are believed to be caused by the recent subsidized fuel price hike.     Irvan Kamal Hakim, Director at Krakatau Steel (Indonesia’s largest steel manufacturer), said that the domestic steel industry is still affected by prolonged concerns about excess steel supply in China, the world's largest steel producer. Amid slowing economic growth in the world’s second-largest economy, domestic steel demand in China has declined resulting in a global oversupply of 525 million tons. Each 1 percent decline in GDP growth in China results in an additional oversupply of 24 million tons of steel.

    Domestic sales of low-cost green cars (LCGCs) in Indonesia may exceed the level of 200,000 units in 2015, a 14 percentage point growth from an estimated 175,000 sold LCGC units this year. Amid slowing domestic car sales (a consequence of the country’s slowing economic growth and tighter monetary policy), popularity of the recently introduced LCGC has managed to support total car sales in Southeast Asia’s largest economy.     Indonesian car exports may reach 310,000 vehicles in 2014, a 12.72 percentage point growth from last year (275,000 vehicles). Exports of completely built up (CBU) units are expected to number 200,000 while completely knocked down (CKD) units are estimated to reach 110,000 units by the year-end. Indonesian Industry Minister MS Hidayat confirmed that the automotive industry of Indonesia has shown good performance.     Car and motorcycle sales increased rapidly in Indonesia throughout March 2014, primarily due to an improved distribution network. In the previous months, heavy rains amid a peak of the rainy season (causing floods in various parts of Indonesia) resulted in the postponement of car and motorcycle purchases. Data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) indicated that car sales surged 18 percent (year-on-year, yoy) to 113,277 units in March 2014, while motorcycle sales grew 9.2 percent (yoy) to 728,820 units.

    In mid-September 2013, South Korean tire producer Hankook Tire, conducted the inauguration of its tire plant in Indonesia. Annual production capacity of the two factories in Korea reached 46.1 million tires in 2013. Meanwhile, the three factories in China have an annual capacity of 30.8 million units each.     The heavily subsidized fuel price of Indonesia is likely to be raised next month according to Indonesian media sources. Various high officials, including Economic minister Hatta Rajasa, discussed the possibility to raise the fuel price from IDR 4,500 (USD $0.46) to IDR 6,500 (USD $0.67) per liter starting from May. This increase will only apply to private passenger cars, and not to motorcycles and public transportation. However, president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has not made up his mind yet.
