After the drastic cabinet reshuffle on Monday 8 September 2025 - when Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto replaced five ministers and created one new ministry - it is interesting to take a look at how markets are responding to these developments after a night's rest.
Indonesia is facing chaotic times, with a series of large anti-government protests having occurred in late August 2025 (leading to at least 10 deaths and extensive damage to public assets). And more problems may loom after Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto decided to go for a cabinet reshuffle on 8 September 2025.

On 22 December 2020 Indonesian President Joko Widodo announced that several ministers in his Onward Indonesia Cabinet (in Indonesian: Kabinet Indonesia Maju) were replaced in order to improve the performance of the cabinet. Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resource Minister Arcandra Tahar was dismissed (honorably) from his post by President Joko Widodo on Monday (15/08) after reports surfaced that indicated Tahar holds American citizenship. Indonesian law does not recognize dual citizenship (except for persons under the age of 18 years). Tahar had only just been appointed the country's Energy Minister in a cabinet reshuffle that took place on 27 July 2016 (Tahar replaced Sudirman Said). State Secretary Pratikno announced the Tahar's dismissal in the late hours on Monday.
Despite fierce international criticism, Indonesia will go-ahead with the executions of 14 convicted drug traffickers, including 10 foreigners (from Nigeria, Zimbabwe, India and Pakistan). According to local media coffins have already arrived at the Nusa Kambangan prison island (Central Java) where executions usually take place, while the families of those who face imminent executions have already been informed. The executions, by firing squad, are expected to be conducted tonight or tomorrow (traditionally around midnight).
In yesterday's cabinet reshuffle Budi Karya Sumadi replaced Ignasius Jonan as Indonesia's new transportation minister. Sumadi is instructed by President Joko Widodo to improve Indonesia's connectivity - on land, sea and air - with the aim to empower the people. Currently, Indonesia is still plagued by weak connectivity, mainly due to the lack of quality and quantity of infrastructure as well as weak public transportation services. If these issues are improved, then businesses will become more competitive on lower logistics costs, while people's access to healthcare services improves.
Indonesian stocks and the rupiah performed well on the day that President Joko Widodo announced his cabinet reshuffle, while Japan announced a larger-than-expected economic stimulus package to boost the local economy. The benchmark stock index of Indonesia (Jakarta Composite Index) surged 0.96 percent to 5,274.36 points, while the Indonesian rupiah appreciated 0.29 percent to IDR 13,137 per US dollar (Bloomberg Dollar Index) on Wednesday (27/07). On Wednesday (27/07) Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo confirmed that he has reshuffled his cabinet, a move aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of his cabinet. Widodo also announced the names of the new ministers. Two names are very interesting: (1) Sri Mulyani Indrawati, who was Indonesia's finance minister between 2005 and 2010, and (2) retired army general Wiranto, who played a key role in handling security issues during the transition from Suharto's New Order to the Reformation era. However, his name is linked to human rights violations.
In local media it is reported that Indonesian President Joko Widodo will announce another cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday afternoon (27/07). The three ministers that - according to speculation in media - are set to be replaced are Industry Minister Saleh Husin, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said, and National Development Planning Minister Sofyan Djalil. It would be the second cabinet reshuffle that is undertaken by Widodo (in August 2015 he replaced six ministers in a cabinet reshuffle).

On Friday (14/10) Indonesian President Joko Widodo appointed Ignasius Jonan as Indonesia's new Energy and Mineral Resources Minister. Jonan is the nation's former Transportation Minister who was replaced by Budi Karya Sumadi in a cabinet reshuffle in late July 2016. Meanwhile, the position of Energy and Mineral Resources Minister had been empty (although for the time being filled by Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Pandjaitan) after the dismissal of Arcandra Tahar in mid-August 2016.
