Manufacturing Activity of Indonesia Dives to All-Time Low in April as Factories Shut Down
Never before did Indonesia’s manufacturing activity collapse so badly in the nine-year history of the IHS Markit Indonesia Manufacturing PMI than in April 2020. The IHS Markit Indonesia Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) plunged to a reading of 27.5 in April 2020 (from 45.3 in the preceding month). It is not only the steepest fall but also the lowest level of operating conditions ever touched since the survey started back in April 2011.

Economy of Indonesia Under Pressure: GDP Growth at 2.97% in Q1-2020
Statistics Indonesia (BPS) released its Q1-2020 gross domestic product (GDP) data for Indonesia on Tuesday (5 May 2020). According to the agency, the Indonesian economy expanded by 2.97 percent year-on-year (y/y) in the first quarter of 2020. The result is well below forecasts, and considering the real impact of the coronavirus crisis (COVID-19) on the Indonesian economy is to occur in the second quarter, we expect to see a deep red number in Q2-2020 (possibly extending into the following quarter).

Consumer Price Index: No Major Changes in Indonesian Inflation in March 2020
Indonesia posted inflation of 0.10 percent month-on-month (m/m) in March 2020, almost unchanged from a pace of 0.11 percent (m/m) in the same month one year earlier. Hence, Indonesia’s consumer price index (abbreviated: CPI) increased 2.96 percent year-on-year (y/y) in March 2020 (from 2.97 percent in the preceding month).

Amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, Indonesia managed to post a strong trade surplus in February 2020. Based on the latest data released by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), Indonesia recorded a USD $2.33 trade surplus. It was the largest monthly trade surplus for Southeast Asia’s largest economy since September 2011.

Indonesia’s Jakarta Composite Index Likely to Touch New Record High Position in 2022
Indonesia’s benchmark stock index (Jakarta Composite Index, or IHSG) grew 10.08 percent in full-year 2021, a good performance after a volatile and highly uncertain 2020 when the COVID-19 crisis emerged. At around 6,580 points on the first trading day of 2022, the index remains at near-record high territory (with the record being set recently, in mid-November 2021, at around 6,750 points).
