    Total foreign direct investment (FDI) in the ASEAN region (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) fell USD $10 billion - or 7.7 percent year-on-year (y/y) - in full-year 2015 according to information from the ASEAN Secretariat. Particularly FDI originating from ASEAN's dialogue partners slid considerably. ASEAN has 10 dialogue partners: Australia, Canada, China, the European Union (EU), India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia, and the United States.

  • Coal Mining Industry Indonesia: China Cuts Output, Prices Rise

    Over the past two months global coal prices have surged, primarily on the back of rising coal demand in China where local coal production capacity was curtailed as authorities seek to curb industrial overcapacity. Indonesia's coal price (Harga Batubara Acuan, abbreviated HBA), a monthly rate set by the nation's Energy and Mineral Resource Ministry, rose 10.1 percent (m/m) to USD $58.37 per ton in August from USD $53.00 per ton in the preceding month, a remarkable rebound that pushed the HBA to a one-year high.

  • Heavy Equipment Sector Indonesia Remains under Pressure

    Production of heavy equipment in Indonesia continues to slide. In the first half of 2016 Indonesia produced a total of 1,471 heavy equipment units, down 35 percent (y/y) from 2,256 units in the same period one year earlier. Meanwhile, utilization of the nation's installed heavy equipment production capacity plunged from 40 percent to 30 percent over the same period. Overall, the heavy equipment sector of Indonesia has been plagued by weak conditions in the mining and agriculture sectors. The construction sector now forms the main source of heavy equipment sales.
