Although in some respects Indonesia has exited the COVID-19 crisis (for example, the economic recession ended in Q2-2021, and the number of new COVID-19 cases and deaths eased significantly), the road ahead is uncertain and full of challenges.

During the COVID-19 crisis, Indonesia’s manufacturing activity experienced extreme lows in Q2-2020 and Q3-2020 before entering a period of fragile recovery. But when the Indonesian government tightened social and business restrictions at the start of July 2021, manufacturing activity again plunged.
To be honest, we were surprised to see deflation in Indonesia in September 2021 as we expected sliding new COVID-19 cases and the government’s relaxation of social and business restrictions (PPKM) on Java and Bali to give a slight boost to demand.
