Indonesia Investments Released February 2026 Report - Mushrooming Illegal Kitchens?
On Wednesday (4 March 2026) Indonesia Investments released the February 2026 edition of its monthly report. The report discusses a selection of topics (related to the Indonesian economy, politics and social matters) that were relevant in the month of February 2026.
What Do We Discuss in the Report?
The first story presented in the report is related to the government's Free Nutritious Meal program. As the government set aside a huge budget for this program, there are bound to be 'vultures' seeking to take advantage of the situation. We focus on a case study from Bantul (Yogyakarta) where a 'MBG kitchen' is being constructed, allegedly without the consent of the adjacent locals and without the proper permits.
Secondly, we present a detailed analysis of Indonesia's Q4-2025 gross domestic product (GDP) growth. Economic growth was better than expected, particularly supported by strong household consumption growth and strong gross fixed capital formation growth.
Another interesting story involves Indonesia's recently signed trade deal with the United States, securing a 19 percent US import tariff (lower than the earlier threatened 32 percent tariff). This was thought the be a great success as many other countries face higher US import tariffs. However, one day after the deal was signed, the US Supreme Court cancelled US President Trump's retaliatory tariffs, which meant that all US import tariffs were set at 15 percent. This is lower than Indonesia's 19 percent! And so, it is interesting to take a closer look at this case as there are different opinions on how to tackle this issue.
We also zoom in on Indonesian inflation. Inflation took a giant leap in February 2026 due to the normalization after the Indonesian government had imposed a 50 percent electricity discount package in January-February 2025.
