Before we delve into Indonesia’s June 2021 trade statistics, we first take a quick look at Indonesia’s full-year 2020 trade performance as Indonesia’s Statistical Agency (Badan Pusat Statistik, BPS) released its annual ‘Indonesian Foreign Trade Statistics – 2020’ report in the first week of July 2021.
In recent months most attention went to the merger of Indonesian ‘superapp’ Gojek and e-commerce giant Tokopedia – including their plans to conduct an initial public offering (IPO) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). But we should not forget that another Indonesian e-commerce giant (and tech startup unicorn), called Bukalapak, is scheduled to list on the IDX on 6 August 2021.
On 8 June 2021 Indonesian Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir told Commission VI of the House of Representatives (DPR) that he proposes to raise the budget for capital injections into state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in 2022. The main reason is that the SOE Ministry wants to inject (additional) capital into 12 SOEs.
While in May 2021 Indonesian inflation accelerated more than we had predicted, in June 2021 we saw the opposite: inflation eased much more than we had anticipated. In fact, Indonesia experienced deflation.
