  • Bank Indonesia’s Consumer Confidence Index Signals Improved Optimism

    The latest Consumer Confidence Index, compiled by the central bank of Indonesia (Bank Indonesia) shows that Indonesian consumers have become more optimistic about their economic prospects in May 2015. The index rose to 112.8 points in May, up 5.4 points from the preceding month (a score higher than 100.0 signal consumer optimism). It was the first time this year that Bank Indonesia’s Consumer Confidence Index, which is based on a sample of 4,600 household in 18 major Indonesian cities, increased.

  • IPO News Indonesia: Binakarya Jaya Abadi & Anabatic Technologies

    Two companies announced to conduct an initial public offering (IPO) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) this month in order to raise funds for further business expansion. These companies are property developer Binakarya Jaya Abadi and IT solutions provider Anabatic Technologies. Up to the start of June, a total of five companies have been listed (including the relisting of Mitra Energi Persada) on the IDX this year. The IDX targets to list a total of 32 companies on the exchange this year.

  • Indonesian Rupiah Hovering Near 17-Year Low on Thursday

    As the Indonesian rupiah continued to depreciate on Thursday (04/06), touching a 17-year low, a central bank official tried to ease concerns by stating that Bank Indonesia is always in the foreign exchange and bond markets to monitor movements and ease volatility. On Thursday morning the bond yield, which has been rising since Friday (29/05), was 8.198 percent. Based on the Bloomberg Dollar Index, Indonesia's rupiah had depreciated 0.11 percent to IDR 13,245 by 11:10 am local Jakarta time.

  • Smoking in Indonesia: Government’s Mixed Tobacco Control Policies

    The number of smokers in Indonesia continues to rise from year to year. Based on the latest data from Basic Health Research (Riset Kesehatan Dasar) a total of 58.8 million Indonesians aged over ten years smoked in 2013, more than ten times the population of neighbouring Singapore. In one year, these smokers lit around 225 billion cigarettes making Indonesia the third-largest tobacco consumer after China and India. More alarming, about four million of these Indonesian smokers are children between the age of 10 to 14 years.
