At end 2012, Indonesia had an Internet penetration rate of 22.1%. This is still a low figure compared to some of its regional peers: Malaysia (60.7%), Vietnam (33.9%), Thailand (30.0%), and Singapore (75%).

One of the current problems with Internet in Indonesia is that there are many illegal Internet services providers active in the country due to weak law enforcement (a characteristic of Indonesia).

Around 50 percent of Indonesian Internet users use a mobile phone to access the Internet. In particular social media are popular among Indonesia´s youth. Indonesia has the world's second largest Facebook community and the third largest number of Twitter users.
