  • Major Earthquakes and Devastating Tsunami Hit Central Sulawesi

    About one month after the devastating earthquakes that hit the island of Lombok and killed nearly 500 people, disaster has now struck at coastal cities and villages in Central Sulawesi. On Friday 28 September 2018 a big 7.5-magnitude earthquake (followed by numerous aftershocks) triggered a massive tsunami that hit at least two cities: provincial capital Palu and Donggala.

    The 6.4-magnitude earthquake that struck Lombok - one of the more popular holiday islands in Indonesia - on Sunday 29 July 2018 and killed 17 people was apparently only a harbinger of things to come. Exactly one week later, on Sunday 5 August 2018, a more powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the same island. This time it killed at least 91 people and damaged thousands of buildings. The number of casualties is likely to rise further in the hours or days ahead.

  • Natural Disasters in Indonesia: Strong Earthquake Rocks Jakarta

    The capital city of Jakarta was rocked by a strong earthquake on Tuesday (23/01) around 13:45 pm local time with its epicenter in the Indian Ocean, about 125 kilometers to the southwest of Jakarta. The quake did not go unnoticed in Jakarta. Many office towers, residential towers and hospitals were evacuated due to concerns about aftershocks, while people fled into the streets in panic.

  • 2016 Was a Year Full of Natural Disasters in Indonesia

    Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said the year 2016 was the worst year over the past 14 years in terms of natural disasters in Indonesia. A total of 2,342 natural disasters, including landslides, floods, storms, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions, were counted by the agency, up 35.2 percent year-on-year (y/y) from 1,732 natural disasters in the preceding year.

  • Earthquake in Indonesia: Dozens Feared Dead in Aceh

    At least 100 people were killed in a 6.4-magnitude (undersea) earthquake in Aceh (Sumatra) at 05:03 am local time on Wednesday morning (07/12). Besides casualties, local media report that numerous houses and buildings have been destroyed. The epicenter of the quake was centered about ten kilometers north of Reuleut (northern Aceh) and is believed to occurred at a depth of 17.2 kilometers. There is no potential for a tsunami according to Indonesia's Climate, Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The latest news reports claim the earthquake had a 7.8 magnitude. Its epicenter was around 800 kilometers southwest of Padang, the capital city of West Sumatra. Indonesian authorities quickly issued a tsunami alert. Reportedly, it was a shallow quake, about 10 kilometers deep (shallow earthquakes are more likely to cause damage than deep ones).

    Rising American and European stock indices last Friday, helped to support Asian stock indices today (22 April 2013), including the Indonesia stock index (IHSG). However, the ongoing drama brought on by last Saturday's earthquake in China, impacted on the China stock index as well as on other Asian stock indices, including the IHSG.
