    Sorini Agro Asia to Delist Shares from Indonesia Stock Exchange

    Artificial sweetener sorbitol manufacturer Sorini Agro Asia Corporindo will voluntarily delist its shares from the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) as it fails to comply with a minimum free-float regulation. Per 31 January 2016 all listed companies in Indonesia are required to have a minimum free float ratio of 7.5 percent (of its paid-up capital) and at least 300 shareholders (BEI No. Kep-00001/BEI/01-2014). These new regulations were implemented in order to boost liquidity in Indonesia's stock market.

    An Update on Indonesia’s Cocoa Bean Production & Export

    Indonesia’s cocoa bean production is expected to range between 500,000 and 700,000 tons in 2015 according to the Indonesian Cocoa Industry Association (AIKI), up from an estimated 485,000 tons in 2014. Earlier, the Indonesian government pledged to launch a USD $95 million cocoa revitalization program in the second quarter of 2015 in an ambitious attempt to double the nation’s cocoa output within a two year period. Indonesia’s Agriculture Ministry targets domestic cocoa bean output of at least one million tons per year.

    Foreign ownership of plantations in Indonesia may be limited to a maximum of 30 percent if a new draft bill designed by Indonesian parliament is approved. This draft bill aims to encourage local participation within Indonesia’s plantation sector at the expense of foreign ownership. Currently, foreign ownership of plantations in Indonesia is set at a maximum of 95 percent. The draft bill also aims to simplify complex rules regarding land use, protect indigenous people, and will make it easier to prosecute companies responsible for forest fires.

    The price of cacao has risen by almost 20 percent since the start of June 2013 and is now around its highest level of 2013. Moreover, the cacao price is expected to keep increasing as analysts foresee a shortage of the commodity on the global market for the next two years. Indonesia, the world's third-largest cacao producer, is considering to lower the import duty for cacao to meet rising demand of its domestic cacao processing industry (amid limited growth in cacao production). Currently, the country levies a 5 percent import duty on cacao.
