It could be that consumers and businesses now actually prefer to save their funds on banks than to spend and invest. Based on data from the Financial Services Authority (OJK) third-party funds in Indonesia's banking sector (saving and deposit accounts) expanded 11.2 percent year-on-year (y/y) to IDR 5,012.5 trillion (approx. USD $3,775.4 billion) in May 2017.

  • Motorcycle Sales Indonesia Jump 15% in May 2017

    Sales of motorcycles in Indonesia showed an improvement ahead of the Idul Fitri celebrations in late June (a popular period to purchase a motorcycle unit). Based on the latest data from the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI) motorcycle sales grew 15.16 percent year-on-year (y/y) to 531,496 units in May 2017, the highest growth rate since August 2014. On a monthly basis motorcycle sales in Indonesia grew 36.96 percent (m/m).

    Bank sentral Indonesia (Bank Indonesia) memprediksi melihat inflasi Indonesia di bulan Juli dalam cakupan 0,46 - 0,60% pada basis month-on-month (m/m). Inflasi di Indonesia selalu memuncak pada bulan Juni, Juli dan Agustus karena peningkatan belanja konsumen karena perayaan Ramadan & Idul Fitri dan juga awal tahun ajaran baru. Pada awal bulan ini, Gubernur Bank Indonesia (BI) Agus Martowadojo mengatakan bahwa inflasi tahunan diprediksi untuk turun di bawah 7% di bulan Juli, dari 7,26% (y/y) di bulan Juni.

    Next week Indonesian authorities start to exempt various goods from the country’s luxury tax in an effort to boost consumption in Indonesia’s slowing economy. Today (12/06), Indonesian Finance Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro said that the government aims to boost Indonesians’ purchasing power, industrial growth and to reduce consumers’ tendency to purchase goods abroad by scrapping the luxury goods sales tax for various products.     An Indonesian analyst says the Indonesian government needs to increase efforts to boost people's purchasing power in order to achieve the government's economic growth target of 5.3 percent in 2016.     In a bid to boost economic activity in Indonesia, the central bank (Bank Indonesia) revised several regulations involving down payments for the purchase of cars and motorcycles as well as the maximum loan-to-value (LTV) ratios for first or more home purchases by Indonesian citizens. Yati Kurniati, Director of Bank Indonesia’s Macroprudential Department, said that the central bank implemented the looser monetary policy in the property and automotive sectors in an effort to boost credit growth, hence boosting the whole economy.

  • Growth of Indonesian Car Sales Falls amid Slowing Economic Expansion

    Amid Indonesia’s slowing economic growth as well as looming higher prices of subsidized fuels (which will cause accelerated inflation and declining purchasing power), domestic car sales in Indonesia have fallen 6.3 percent to 104,916 units in October 2014 from the same month last year according to preliminary data from the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo). Cumulatively, car sales reached 1.04 million units in the first ten months of 2014, a slight 1.6 percentage point increase from the same period last year.
