Vietnam and Indonesia are the top performers in terms of productivity growth (growth of the average output per worker) supported by the ongoing shift from agriculture to more capital-intensive sectors (manufacturing and the service industries).

  • Indonesia's Gini Ratio Fell in 2015; Concerns about Social Cohesion Persist

    Indonesia's Gini ratio (or Gini coefficient), which measures the degree of inequality in income distribution, improved slightly in September 2015. According to the latest data published by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the Gini ratio of Indonesia fell from 0.41 in March 2015 to 0.40 in September 2015, indicating that income distribution inequality slightly declined (a coefficient of zero expresses perfect equality, while a reading of 1 implies maximal inequality). The modest improvement occurred in the urban areas of Indonesia where the Gini ratio fell 0.1 point to 0.43. In the rural areas the ratio remained stagnant at 0.33.

  • Statistics Agency: Unemployment in Indonesia on the Rise

    Unemployment in Indonesia increased to 6.18 percent of the labour force in August 2015, or 7.56 million people in absolute terms, from 5.81 percent in February (or 7.45 million unemployed people) as the economic slowdown led to layoffs and slower absorption of the workforce. In the second quarter of 2015 Indonesia's economy grew at the slowest pace in six years at 4.67 percent (y/y) and only managed to improve slightly (4.73 percent y/y) in the third quarter.

  • Fourth Economic Stimulus Package Indonesia: Employment

    On Thursday (15/10), Indonesian Chief Economics Minister Darmin Nasution unveiled the fourth economic stimulus package with a main focus on boosting labor and employment in Indonesia. A key policy in the new package is the fixed formula that will be applied by the government to determine increases in labor wages across the 34 provinces of the Archipelago. The government said it will allow a wage increase, every year, based on the provincial inflation rate and economic growth pace.

    Tomorrow (Tuesday 01 September 2015) around 50,000 Indonesian workers are expected to demonstrate on the streets of Central Jakarta and demand for higher wages. This mass protest is a response to the many layoffs that occurred in Indonesia’s labor-intensive industries in recent months (while more layoffs are expected in the period ahead) as well as a response to people’s weakening purchasing power (curtailed by prolonged high inflation).

  • Berapa Upah Minimum di Indonesia di Tahun 2015?

    Total 29 provinsi Indonesia telah mengkonfirmasi upah minimum regional baru untuk tahun 2015. Secara keseluruhan (mengecualikan empat provinsi yang tersisa), rata-rata upah minimum Indonesia naik 12,77% pada basis year-on-year (y/y) di tahun 2015. Meskipun kenaikan ini cukup signifikan, kenaikan ini lebih kecil dibandingkan kenaikan upah minimum Indonesia di tahun 2014 (19,10% y/y).   • 24 Indonesian Provinces Have Set New Regional Minimum Wage for 2014

    Per 14 November 2013, 24 Indonesian provinces have confirmed their new provincial minimum wage for the year 2014. As Indonesia numbers 34 provinces in total, 10 more provinces are expected to announce their new minimum wages soon. It is interesting to note that of the 24 provinces that have already published the new minimum wage, 11 provinces have set the minimum wage below the assumed need for decent living in the province, which implies that the minimum wage is not enough to finance a person's minimum monthly basic needs.

  • Unemployment in Indonesia Declines Steadily According to Latest BPS Data

    According to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) that was published yesterday, Indonesia's unemployment rate has fallen to 5.92 percent in February 2013 from 6.14 percent in August 2012. BPS, a government agency, always takes the months February and August as bases to release its (un)employment figures. From August 2012 to February 2013 about 3.1 million Indonesians were added to Indonesia's labor force. This means that the country's current labor force numbers 121.2 million people (out a total population of 240 million).
